POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball picked up a thrilling 90-88 OT win over the Manhattan Jaspers on Monday night at McCann Arena. The victory marks the second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season for the Red Foxes and lifts them to a 5-10 (2-2 MAAC) record while the loss drops the Jaspers to 5-9 (0-3 MAAC) on the year.
Red-shirt senior Khallid Hart led Marist with 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor and 5-for-6 shooting from the foul line. Hart also recorded three rebounds, two assists and one steal on the night. Sophomore Brian Parker chipped in 19 points on 7-for-16 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and six assists. Sophomore Ryan Funk finished with 13 points, his ninth straight game in double digits and freshman Tobias Sjoberg tied a career high with four blocks.
Junior Calvin Crawford led Manhattan with 18 points on 6-for-15 shooting from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line while junior Zane Waterman chipped in 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Marist held the MAAC's fifth leading scorer Zavier Turner without a field goal until the final play of overtime. Turner shot 1-for-13 from the field and finished with eight points, six assists and eight rebounds.Â
The Red Foxes shot 28-for-58 (.483) from the floor, 8-for-22 (.364) from behind the arc and 26-for-40 (.650) from the foul line. The Jaspers shot 32-for-85 (.376) from the field, including 6-for-28 (.214) from behind the arc and 18-for-22 (.818) from the charity stripe. Manhattan outrebounded Marist 51-39, including 21-6 on the offensive glass.
The Red Foxes jumped out to the early lead, and headed into the half with the 33-31 lead.
The second half started the same as the first, with Marist jumping out to leads of four, five, six and seven points at different stages of the opening seven minutes of the second half. The Jaspers trimmed the deficit and took their first lead of the half at 49-48 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game.
The Red Foxes regained the lead several minutes later and extended it to six points with 9:07 left before Manhattan again trimmed the deficit and regained the lead at 68-66 with 3:17 left in the game. The Jaspers took a four point lead shortly after, before Funk trimmed the Marist deficit to one with a huge three from the right side of the key. The shot energized Marist and they regained the lead again and led by as many as three points with 1:08 remaining but again Manhattan came back and tied it up 74-74 with a free throw shot with 12 seconds in the game. The Red Foxes had a chance to win it at the buzzer but Parker's shot just bounced off the back rim and out as the clock expired.
With the game in overtime, Marist built off their momentum from the first two halves and took the early lead and extended it to an eight point advantage at 84-76 with 2:30 to go in overtime. Just as they did in the earlier periods, the Jaspers clawed back, trimming the deficit to as little as three with four seconds left but clutch foul shooting by junior Obi Momah who finished 5-for-6 from the line with all his attempts coming in the last 30 seconds of overtime, clinched the victory 90-88.
Up next, Marist will remain home as they host the Rider Broncs on Friday, Jan. 6th at McCann Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM.
