BUFFALO, New York – Behind a career-high 28 points from Maura Fitzpatrick, the Marist women's basketball team defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins, 85-74, Thursday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 3-2 in MAAC play and 6-9 overall. Canisius falls to 3-11 overall and 2-3 in conference.
Along with Fitzpatrick, Marist had four other players in double-digits, as contributions from Hannah Hand, Kendall Baab, Claire Oberdorf, and Rebekah Hand complimented Fitzpatrick's career day.
Hannah Hand scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out six assists. Baab also notched a new career-high, scoring 13 points on a 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw stripe. Oberdorf scored 10 points including a couple of timely threes and Rebekah Hand added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Marist finished the game 26-for-30 from the free throw line. After scoring 25 in the first quarter and only eight in the second, the Red Foxes rattled off quarters of 25 and 28 respectively, both season highs, and the team's 53 second half points are the most since scoring 49 in a half against Niagara last season.Â
The Red Foxes got off to a strong start holding a 25-14 advantage, ending the quarter on an 11-2 run powered by 11 points from Fitzpatrick.
The Griffins bounced back, rattling off a 12-1 run to start the second quarter to tie the game at 26-26. Before a layup from Hannah Hand, a 5-for-5 stretch and 12-0 run while holding Marist scoreless for nearly three minutes closed the quarter for Canisius. The Red Foxes headed to half trailing by eight, 40-32.
Along with five quick points from Fitzpatrick, a pair of freebies from Hannah Hand and a triple by Baab the Red Foxes pulled back to within three with just under five minutes to go in the third.
An offensive rebound by Oberdorf who then retreated into the corner to nail a triple momentarily gave Marist the 54-53 edge with little over two minutes to go in the third. Canisius responded with a 6-0 run before a three ball from Fitzpatrick cut the deficit again. Â Canisius headed to the fourth with a three point, 60-57 lead.
The Red Foxes would cut the lead to one three times in the fourth before taking advantage again. A drive and scoop layup from Hannah Hand with 5:17 remaining in the game would give Marist a 66-65 lead. The Red Foxes would score on two more consecutive possessions to take a 70-65 lead and never trail again.
Marist will conclude its stretch of three consecutive road games on Saturday, January 7, when the Red Foxes continue on against Niagara. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
