Men's Soccer Hosts Monmouth on Wednesday Night

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York — The Marist men's soccer team returns to Tenney Stadium and resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a match vs the Monmouth Hawks on Wednesday at 7 PM.

LAST TIME OUT:

The Red Foxes are coming off a 1-0 OT loss at Iona on Saturday. With both teams looking to get back on track, the opening 45 minutes were all about defense. The Gaels produced the only scoring opportunities but senior goalie Mark Rajovic made several key saves to send the game to halftime scoreless.

The second half started much like the first, with Iona generating the majority of pressure but again Rajovic was up to the task to keep the game 0-0. With 18 minutes left in regulation, Marist countered on an errant Gael pass and freshman Justin Jaime collected a pass at the top of the box and ripped a shot toward the bottom left corner but the Iona goalie made the diving save. Just over six minutes later, freshman Allen Gavilanes hit a shot from the left side that was dropping toward the goal but was knocked over the cross bar and out of play by the Gael keeper.

With the game scoreless after 90 minutes, the two teams headed to sudden death overtime. Seven minutes into the extra period, a ball from the left side found sophomore Ernest Mitchell on the right side of the box who fired a shot toward the far post but again the Iona goalie made a diving save. With time winding down in the first overtime, the ball bounced into the Red Foxes 18 yard box with a scrum ensuing before a Gael player ran onto the loose ball and fired it home for the 1-0 win.

A SQUAD RANKED IN THE TOP OF THE MAAC

Marist currently ranks at the top of the conference in several categories including first in corners (71), second in shots (170), tied for second in assists (20), third in saves (52) and fourth in goals (16) and points (52).
