BUFFALO, New York – The Marist men's swimming and diving team showed its depth and edged Canisius, 158-142, on Oct. 13 to begin the 2017-18 regular season.
The meet came down to the final relay when the 400-yard freestyle foursome of junior
Daniel Knoll, freshman
Diego Faucher, freshman
Murray Coueslant, and junior
Miguel Madeira clocked in at the fastest dual meet time in school history (3:08.67).
Sophomore
Evan Nilsson took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle and his time of 9:37.70 was just three seconds slower than his time at last year's MAAC Championships, which took place in the same pool Marist competed in today. He won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.17 and placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.99).
In other individual victories Knoll clocked in at 47.21 seconds to place first in the 100-yard freestyle and junior
Mark Miller stole a late win in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.81). Coueslant took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle
On both diving boards senior
Peter Gallino and sophomore
Raislan Aiken placed third and fourth respectively.
Notes
- Marist finished 2-5 in three events: the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, and 200-yard butterfly. Nilsson, freshman
John Hurley and Coueslant were the respective no. 2 finishers.
- Nilsson led a 1-2-3 Marist finish in the 500-yard freestyle as he was followed by Madeira and sophomore
Michael O'Donovan.
- The top four finishers in the 200-yard freestyle were all Red Foxes, as Coueslant led the group by .04 seconds with a time of 1:43.94. Madeira, O'Donovan and Miller rounded out the rest of the pack.
- Gallino racked up 289.50 points and 312.98 points at one and three meters respectively while Aiken's higher score came on the 1-meter board (278.48 points). Aiken's score at three meters was 264.23 points.
- Canisius senior Travis Wright claimed the top spot on both diving boards with 320.85 points and 369.90 points at one and three meters respectively.
