Men's Soccer Beaten by Canisius 4-2

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's soccer team fell to the Canisius Golden Griffins 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.

SUMMARY:

Neither team found the back of the net in the first half but the Golden Griffins opened the scoring in the 60th minute when two quick passes found a Canisius player behind the Red Fox defense for a breakaway that he put away for the 1-0 lead. The Golden Griffins added three more goals in the next 17 minutes to take a 4-0 lead.

Marist narrowed the deficit to 4-1 in the 83rd minute when freshman Allen Gavilanes found junior co-captain Simon Lund Jorgensen on the left wing off a free kick. Lund Jorgensen's cross then found the head of sophomore Ernest Mitchell who put it into the back of the goal for the 1-0 and his first career goal. Just over two minutes later, the Red Foxes made it 4-2 when Gavilanes crossed the ball from the left wing into the box and found a streaking junior Abby Elsayed who headed the ball into the net for his first career goal. However, that was as close as Marist would come and the final horn sounded on the 4-2 defeat.

KEY STATS:
  • The Red Foxes outshot Canisius 14-12
  • The Golden Griffins held a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal
  • Marist had 8 corner kicks to Canisius' 4
GAME NOTES:
  • Gavilanes extended his point streak to four games with his 2 assists and now has points in 11 of 16 games played and multiple points in 8 of 16 games
  • Both Mitchell's and Elsayed's goals were the first of their careers
QUOTE:

"It's a game of bounces and inches. I thought our response to their goal was disappointing. It was nice to comeback late but we have to be mentally stronger. We've had a lot of adversity this year and this is the wrong time to rollover but we still have a chance and we need to go take care of business these next two games." – head coach Matt Viggiano

UP NEXT:

Next up, the Red Foxes hit the road for their final regular season road trip of 2017 when they head to Lawrenceville, NJ for a matchup at the Rider Broncs on Saturday at 7 PM.
