POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action after a three week hiatus from competition, when they host the Fairfield Stags in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference dual meet on Saturday in McCann Natatorium at 1 p.m.
The Red Fox women stand at 2-1 overall (2-0 MAAC), while the men are 2-1 (1-1 MAAC).
LAST TIME OUT – WOMEN:
Marist is coming off its second consecutive MAAC victory this season, a 178-122 win over the Rider Broncs on Saturday, Oct. 28
th. The win was also the team's 42
nd straight MAAC dual meet victory, with the Red Foxes' last loss coming against the Broncs in 2009.
Senior captain
Georgia Goldman won all three individual events in which she competed, clocking in at a season best time of 59.17 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke. She earned a total of 31 points for the Red Foxes after she finished first in the 50- (25.11 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (55.03 seconds).
Senior
Sara Nestrowitz also contributed to the strong outing for the Marist captains when she competed successfully at a shorter distance and touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.69). Nestrowitz also took the top spot in the 500-yard event (5:12.78) and helped a Marist relay team come from behind to take first place the 400-yard freestyle relay. She was the anchor of the foursome that touched .01 second faster than Rider's squad to help the Red Foxes win the final event of the meet in 3:43.87.
On the diving boards freshman
Esabelle Gervasio was second in the 1-meter event with 225.23 points.
LAST TIME OUT – MEN:
The men's team fell to Rider 168-132 in their last meet on Saturday, Oct. 28
th.
Sophomore
Raislan Aiken took the top spot on both diving boards beginning the afternoon slightly ahead of Rider freshman Dillon Walles with a career best final score of 316.58 points to win the 3-meter dive. He then went on to place first ahead of senior teammate
Peter Gallino on the 1-meter board, marking the first time in Aiken's career that he won both diving events. I
In the swimming pool, Marist's long distance freestyle strength was on full display. Sophomore
Michael O'Donovan kicked off a 1-2-3 Marist finish in the 500-yard freestyle after he clocked in at 4:44.83. Junior
Miguel Madeira (4:45.78) and sophomore
Evan Nilsson (4:49.88) followed. In the 1,000-yard event freshman
John Hurley led the pack of Red Foxes, touching in at a personal best 9:42.81. O'Donovan and Nilsson came in second and third, respectively.
MAAC WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK:
Goldman was selected MAAC Women's Swimmer of the Week on November 1
st for her three event victories against the Broncs.
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD - WOMEN:
The Stags are coming off a 171-117 loss to the Fordham Rams on Saturday, Nov. 11
th and stand at 3-1 (1-0 MAAC).
Sarah Herbold tallied three event wins on the day, winning the 200 meter freestyle with a final time of 2:08.55 and the 100 meter freestyle clocking in at 59.74. She finished the day with a victory in the 100 meter butterfly
finishing at 1:06.08.
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD – MEN:
The Stags are coming off a 188-92 loss to the Rams on Saturday, Nov. 11
th and have a 1-3 (1-0 MAAC) record on the season.
Benjamin Kebbell and
Jordan Rahurahu each won two events and set new program records. Kebbell won the 200 meter freestyle setting a record with a time of 1:57.39 that broke the previous record of 1:57.61 set by Cody Parker in 2012 and also won the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 53.14.
Rahurahu won the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:12.62 that broke the old record of 4:13.41 set by Cody Parker in 2012. He also won the 400 meter freestyle clocking in at 2:10.39.
