Women's Basketball Tips Off Rainbow Wahine Showdown Friday

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Marist women's basketball team kicks off play at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Friday, November 24th against the University of Hawaii. The tournament, which is hosted at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, will see the Red Foxes take on Hawaii for the first time, USC for the first time, and Purdue for just the second time in program history. Tip-off for the Red Foxes first game at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown is 10:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. HT.

SCOUTING HAWAII
The Rainbow Wahine are now 3-1 after their last game, 64-63, overtime victory over San Diego on November 19th. Senior Sarah Toeaina locked up Bank of Hawai'i Classic MVP and Big West Player of the Week honors after averaging 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 51.7 percent from the field during the tournament. Hawaii currently has three players averaging double-digit scoring outputs, led by Toeaina. The Rainbow Wahine average 67 points a game against 66.2 for their opponents.

SCOUTING USC
The Red Foxes and Trojans will face off for the first time ever on Saturday, November 25th. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m. HT. USC rolls into the tournament at 4-0 overall, and has received votes in the Nov. 20 AP Top 25 poll. The Trojans high powered offense and stingy defense sees them outscoring its opponents by 26.3 points per game.

SCOUTING PURDUE
A team that has also received votes in the AP Top 25 poll earlier this season, Purdue is 3-1 as it heads into the Rainbow Wahine Showdown. Their last game saw the Boilermakers fall to Utah, 81-68. Purdue currently features four players who score in double-digits. This is just the second time in program history that Purdue and Marist will face one another. The last time these two teams met #14/12 Purdue came away victorious, 71-50, at the Paradise Jam in 2012-13. The Red Foxes and Boilermakers will conclude the tournament on Sunday when they square off at 7:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. HT.

MARIST UPDATE
The Marist women's basketball team suffered a tough 78-72 defeat to the hands of Northeastern of the Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday afternoon. The Red foxes got off to a slow start, falling behind 6-0, and 9-2 in the very beginning of the first quarter. The Red Foxes started to turn things around when they went on a 10-0 run towards the middle of the second quarter, which included three layups from sophomore Rebekah Hand, to cut the deficit to five points. A late rally by the Red Foxes came up short, and Northeastern hung on for a 78-72 win.

LAST TIME IN HAWAII
The Red Foxes last trip to the islands was a good one, as Marist won all three games at the 2007 Oahu Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii in a season that eventually saw the Red Foxes finish 32-3 and a perfect 18-0 in the MAAC. Marist defeated Utah (70-66 OT), Nebraska (66-59), and Eastern Washington (74-50) on its way to the Oahu Classic crown.
