LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The Marist women's basketball team jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter and kept Rider at a distance for the remainder, picking up an 80-69 victory and its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season Thursday night at the Alumni Gymnasium.
Rebekah Hand led the Red Foxes with a season-high 29 points to go along with 10 rebounds and was one of four players in double-figures. The Red Foxes are now 5-8 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play while Rider drops to 3-9 (0-1 MAAC) on the season.
SUMMARY
A 10-0 start for the Red Foxes turned into a 29-8 lead after the first quarter as Marist went 14-for-19 (.737) from the field and held Rider to just 4-for-15 (.267) shooting. Rider fought back in the second quarter as the Red Foxes percentages cooled off. The Broncs started the new quarter on a 10-1 run, outscored Marist 24-15 in the second, and pulled the deficit back to 12 at the half.
The third quarter saw a more even pace between the two squads as the Red Foxes kept the Broncs at arm's length and headed to the fourth with a 10-point, 61-51 lead. Less than two minutes into the fourth, Rider would cut it to under 10 for the first time since the first half but timely buckets from Hand and strong free throw shooting in the fourth staved off the Broncs' comeback attempt.
