POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's basketball team defeated Canisius, 76-74, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup Feb. 19 in McCann Arena.

The win brings the Red Foxes to 7-22 overall and 4-14 in conference play. Canisius moves to 17-12 overall and 10-8 in MAAC play.

Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart led Marist with 22 points and finished one short of a career high with eight rebounds. He also shot 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. Sophomore forward Ryan Funk went 5-for-6 from three-point range and finished with 21 points. Marist shot a season-best .595 (25-for-42) from the field, went 9-for-20 from three-point range (.450), and 17-for-22 (.773) from the free-throw line.

There were three ties in the early going until Canisius ripped off a 9-2 run that ended at the second media timeout of the game. A three by sophomore swingman David Knudsen with 49 seconds left in the half brought Marist to within three, but it was the Golden Griffins that had the 39-33 edge at the halftime break.

The Golden Griffins expanded their lead to as much as 11 with 18:56 remaining. The Red Foxes immediately answered with an 8-0 run, and then went ahead 51-50 on a three from Hart with 13:08 left. The lead changed hands four times over the next 2:24, but Hart's basket with 10:44 left gave Marist the lead for good.

With 3:15 to play, a three by Funk gave Marist an eight-point lead, but Canisius charged back to get within one, 75-74, on a jumper by senior Phil Valenti with 1:06 left. Marist forced a turnover on the next Golden Griffins' possession and Hart sank a free throw to give the Red Foxes a two-point lead. Cansius had two chances to score on its final possession, but were unable to send the game to overtime.

Douse led the Golden Griffins with 19 points, while Valenti scored 16 points along with two rebounds and two assists.

The Red Foxes will play their final contest of a three-game homestand when they battle Quinnipiac on Thursday, Feb. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be carried by ESPN3 as part of the MAAC television package. Tickets are available on MaristTickets.com. Marist will honor Hart and Kentrall Brooks in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
