JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist women's basketball team picked up another road win, defeating the Saint Peter's Peacocks in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action, 66-58, Friday evening at the Yanitelli Center. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 11-12 overall and 8-5 in MAAC play. Saint Peter's falls to 3-19 overall and 2-11 in conference.
Maura Fitzpatrick led the way for the Red Foxes, scoring 17 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. Rebekah Hand also played a major role for Marist with 14 total points, a team-high nine rebounds and five assists. Lovisa Henningsdottir scored 11 behind three triples and Claire Oberdorf added 10 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Both teams came out hot from three in the first quarter, combining for seven threes apiece as Marist led 18-17 after one. Fitzpatrick, Oberdorf, Baab, and Rebekah Hand all knocked down three balls for the Red Foxes in the first.
After Saint Peter's tied it at 22-22 about halfway through the second quarter, the Red Foxes rattled off an 8-2 run to take control and push the lead to 30-24 with two minutes to go in the half. The teams traded baskets to end the half and Marist would lead 33-29 at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Saint Peter's scored the new half's first two baskets to tie it up again. Marist responded with back-to-back triples to push the lead back up to six, 39-33 with just under six minutes to go in the third.
The Red Foxes closed the third on another run to take a 50-39 lead into the fourth. In all the 17-6 run after Saint Peter's had knotted the score gave the Red Foxes enough cushion to never truly be tested in the final quarter.
Marist will get a few days off but continue on the road for its next contest at Quinnipiac on Thursday, February 9th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
