WAPPINGERS FALLS, New York – The Marist men's tennis team picked up its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the season, defeating the Rider Broncs 7-0, Thursday afternoon at the Cross Court Tennis Facility. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Red Foxes started with singles play and took control early in the match. Gianlucca Massa put the first point on the board for the Red Foxes, downing Rider's Jeremy Van Herwarde, 6-0, 6-0.
Rudolf Kurz then won his match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, over Rider's Adam Levi and Javier Restrepo followed up with a straight set victory over Chris Popso. Max Darrington would then clinch the match for Marist with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over the Broncs' Griffin Clark.
Jan Dernic and Christopher Gladden would both win their singles matches in straight sets as well followed by the Red Foxes wrapping up play with doubles action.
Kurz teamed up with Gladden, Restrepo paired up with Massa, and Justin Chanthalangsy and Dylan Fletcher would take part in their only match of the day as the Red Foxes won all three doubles matches by the score of 6-1.
“I'm really happy the guys got a chance to play outside,” said head coach Tim Smith. “The next really telling match as to where we are as a team will be against Quinnipiac next Wednesday. Hopefully the weather holds out so we can play outside as we're very anxious to continue outdoors.
The Red Foxes will continue MAAC play next Wednesday, April 5th when they host the Quinnipiac Bobcats. First set is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
