Baseball Falls to Stony Brook 9-2

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist baseball team had its three game win sneak snapped with a 9-2 loss to the Stony Brook Seawolves on Tuesday at McCann Field. With the loss, the Red Foxes fall to 15-12 (5-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), while the Seawolves improve to 16-14 (4-2 America East).

Redshirt junior Greg Kocinski led Marist offensively on the afternoon, finishing with two hits and two RBI, while sophomore Frankie Gregoire finished with two hits and one run scored. Redshirt freshman Tyler Kapuscinski chipped in a hit and one run scored and junior Andrew Rouse, senior Tyler Kirkpatrick and junior Matt Iantosca each picked up a hit on the day.

On the mound, freshman Conor McNamara got the start and picked up just his second loss of the year, throwing two and one third innings, giving up four runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Freshman Skyler Pichardo made his debut for the Red Foxes, throwing two and one third innings, giving up three runs (none earned) on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Junior Spencer Bunting pitched two and one third innings giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts and freshman Will Van Buesekom also made his Marist debut, throwing no runs on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.

Stony Brook opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Brandon Janofsky and Casey Baker hit back-to-back singles to set up men on first and third with one out. Two batters later, Bobby Honeyman walked to load the bases and Andruw Gazzola singled to third, scoring Janofsky to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead.

One inning later, Stony Brook added to its lead on a David Real one out double to left field. Toby Handley followed with a single to left, advancing Real to third and Janofsky singled through the right side, scoring Real and Baker followed with a sac fly to center, scoring Handley and the lead was 3-0.

In the top of the third, the Seawolves tacked on one more run when Gazzola was hit by a pitch with one out. Pichardo replaced McNamara on the mound and Gazzola stole second during the ensuing at bat. Two batters later, Jeremy Giles singled to center, scoring Gazzola and the score was 4-0 Stony Brook.

The Red Foxes got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Gregoire singled with one out and advanced to second on a ground out. Kocinski followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Gregoire to trim the deficit to 4-1.

The Seawolves added four more in the top of the fifth when Gazzola led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch three batters later. Real walked, Gazzola advanced to third on a wild pitch, Handley walked to load the bases and Bunting replaced Pichardo on the hill. Janofsky reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed Gazzola to score and loaded the bases and Baker reached on an error by the left fielder that allowed Janofsky and Handley to score and it was 8-1 Stony Brook.

Two innings later the Seawolves made it 9-1 when Giles led off, reaching on a hit by pitch. Two batters later, Handley singled through the left side, setting up men on first and second with one out and Janofsky singled to right field, scoring Giles.

In the bottom of the eight, Marist added another run. Kapuscinski and Gregoire led off with back-to-back singles, Rouse reached on a fielder's choice with Gregoire out at second and advanced Kapuscinski to third and Kocinski followed with a sac fly to right field that scored Kapuscinski to make it 9-2 Seawolves.

That was as close as Marist would come however and Stony Brook picked up the 9-2 win.

The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday as they travel to West Hartford, CT for a matchup with the Hartford Hawks at 3 PM.
