POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's lacrosse team clinched a berth in the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships with a close 7-6 victory over Detroit Mercy on April 22.
The win came on Alumni Day in Tenney Stadium and brought the Red Foxes to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Titans dropped to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in MAAC competition this season.
This year's MAAC Men's Lacrosse Championship will take place in Tenney Stadium with the semifinals set for May 5 and the final scheduled for 10 a.m. May 7 on ESPNU.
In today's win, senior J.D. Recor dished out two assists to reach 128 for his career and move within one of tying the MAAC record set in 2005. Junior Gannon Morrison hit the back of the net four times and redshirt junior Brian Corrigan sprawled for 12 saves in goal.
Marist held the Titans off the scoreboard in the first half and scored five goals of its own. Freshman Joe Tierney extended his point streak to 13 games when he scored a man up goal early in the second quarter and Morrison added two for good measure in the final four minutes of the first half.
Each team scored a pair of goals in the third stanza, but the Titans cut into the Marist deficit with four goals in the fourth quarter on a run that began with a man up score from junior Alec Gilhooly. An unassisted Detroit Mercy score with 2:28 made it 7-6 in favor of Marist. The Red Foxes won the ensuing faceoff and Tierney fired a shot as the shot clock expired that was saved by senior Jason Weber. On the final possession, Gilhooly wound up for a shot that went wide right of the net with three seconds remaining and Marist held on for the win. Â
Detroit Mercy senior goalie Jason Weber tied a team high with three ground balls and made 10 saves. Sophomore Patrick Walsh netted a pair of goals.
The Red Foxes' defense held advantages in ground balls (19-16) and caused turnovers (5-2). On the other end, Detroit Mercy outshot the Red Foxes 36-29 and the Titans' defense converted on all 17 clear attempts. Â
Marist will host Siena in its 2017 regular season finale at 7 p.m. April 29 in Tenney Stadium. Seven seniors and two redshirt juniors will be honored in a pregame Senior Night ceremony.
