Baseball Completes Series Sweep

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist baseball team won at Saint Peter's by a score of 6-2 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Sunday. The victory gave the Red Foxes a three-game sweep of the series with the Peacocks.

Junior catcher Matt Iantosca reached base successfully in all four of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Red-shirt junior first baseman Greg Kocinski went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

The Red Foxes struck early with two runs in the first, and three in the second. With one out in the first, junior third baseman Andrew Rouse singled, and then stole second. After a walk to sophomore left fielder Frankie Gregoire, Kocinski's RBI single brought home Rouse with the first run of the game. Senior center fielder Tyler Kirkpatrick then delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Gregoire.

The Peacocks answered with a run in their half of the first, but Marist countered with three in the top of the second. Sophomore designated hitter Randy Taveras came home due to an error on a play that resulted in Iantosca stealing second. Kocinski then added a two-out, two-run single, which brought home Iantosca and sophomore shortstop Anthony Lazar. Iantosca's two-out single in the fifth plated Kirkpatrick with the Red Foxes' final run.

Red-shirt junior right-hander Scott Boches (6-5) earned the win with 7.1 strong innings on the mound. Boches struck out five, did not walk anyone, and scattered seven hits. Just one of the two runs he permitted was earned. Junior lefty Mike Coss relieved Boches in the eighth and retired all five batters he faced, two via strikeout.

Jose Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Saint Peter's offense. Michael Ammerman (0-5), who started and struck out five in seven innings, took the loss.

The Red Foxes improved to 22-18 overall, and 10-5 in the MAAC with three conference weekends remaining. Saint Peter's is 0-27 overall and 0-15 in conference play. The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference game at Holy Cross. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
