POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Former Marist head men's basketball coach and director of athletics Ron Petro returned to campus this past weekend.
Petro was honored at the Red Fox Club Barbecue on Sept. 8, and a reception was held for him at the Marist football team's home opener against Stetson on Sept. 9. He also took part in the game's coin toss.
Petro, along with Erica (Allenspach) Woytek, will be this year's Marist inductees into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Honor Roll. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Petro served as head men's basketball coach at Marist from 1966-84, and director of athletics from 1977-84. He pioneered the school's move to Division I, and his tenure as men's basketball coach is tied for the longest in program history. He spearheaded the growth of several facilities, including the building of the McCann Center, and founded the Red Fox Club. He also developed summer sports camps, and initiated and coached the school's men's and women's tennis programs.
