WEST POINT, New York – The Marist women's tennis team kicked off its season at the Army West Point Invitational Friday, competing in different flights of play in singles and doubles.
In flight A singles
Claire Schmitz faced off against Army West Point's Kirby Einck. Schmitz would drop her first match of the season, 6-1, 6-0. Also in flight A singles, Julia Gaby competed in her first collegiate tennis match, battling against Lehigh's Christina Auyeung but falling 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 in the tiebreak.
In flight B singles, Samantha Galu earned her first career victory as she defeated Binghamton's Tiffany Dun, 4-6, 6-3, 10-2. Galu moves on to face Army West Point's Anastasiya Joyner on Saturday.
Elizabeth Brozovich fell in flight C singles to Seton Hall's Melody Taal, 6-0, 6-1 and will compete tomorrow in C singles consolation round.
Amy Galloway and
Sophia Chavarria would both represent Marist in flight D singles. Galloway will move on as she defeated Wagner's Melanie Post, 6-1, 6-4. Chavarria would drop her match to Lehigh's Kirstin Godau, 6-1, 7-5.
In A doubles, Schmitz and Gaby would team up but lose to Sacred Heart's Tobia and Navarro, 6-4. In B doubles Galloway and Chavarria joined forces to win 7-6 (5) over Quinnipiac's Mircea and Zammarieh. Also in B doubles, Brozovich and Galu would win their match 6-4 over Lehigh's pairing.
The Red Foxes will keep it going at West Point Saturday and Sunday with more singles and doubles matches.
