Men's Soccer Opens MAAC Play vs Saint Peter's

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York — The Marist men's soccer team opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play when the Red Foxes host the Saint Peter's Peacocks at Tenney Stadium on Wednesday (7 p.m.). 

LAST TIME OUT: 

After a scoreless first half, Marist got on the board first in the 55th minute when junior co-captain Simon Lund Jorgensen carried the ball into the offensive zone and played a beautiful through ball to sophomore David Nkansah-Siriboe who found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. The Bonnies answered back 53 seconds later when a ball deflected to an open player who hit a shot that found the bottom right corner. Fifteen minutes later, the Red Foxes regained the lead when senior Drew Sullivan intercepted a St. Bonaventure pass and found junior Abby Elsayed on the right side. Elsayed's cross found junior Bruce Jeter who burried the ball into the net for the 2-1 lead. Just over a minute later, Marist extended its lead to 3-1 when Jeter found Elsayed who played the ball to freshman Allen Gavilanes who ripped a shot past the keeper for the game's final goal.

CONTRIBUTIONS FROM ALL AROUND:

In the game vs the Bonnies, the Red Foxes had 15 of their 19 field players who played register at least one shot, 12 register at least one shot on goal, had three different goal scorers and four players with assists.

CAREER GAME:

Against St. Bonventure, Marist also had two players record career firsts, with Elsayed recording his first two career assists and points and Sullivan recording his first career assist and point. 

LOVIN A LITTLE HOME COOKIN':

In just two games this year at Tenney Stadium, the Red Foxes have scored six goals, recorded 10 assists and had 35 shots and 18 shots on goal to go along with two wins. 

FRESHMAN PHENOM:

Freshman Allen Gavilanes continues his incredible freshman season during which he leads Marist in assists (6), points (12), shots (19) and is tied for first in goals (3) and shots on goal (8). He has recorded at least one point in his last three consecutive games and six of eight so far this season.

TOP OF THE MAAC:

In just six career games, Gavilanes is currently tied for third in the MAAC in goals (3), tied for second in the conference in shots (19), is second in points (12) and first in assists (6).

Junior Juan Parada currently ranks fourth in the MAAC in assists (3).

Senior Mark Rajovic has played every minute in goal so far this season. He ranks fifth in the conference in save percentage (.745), fourth in saves per game (4.38) and is second in saves (35). 

BEST IN THE COUNTRY:

Gavilanes is amongst the nations elite as well and ranks 38th in points per game (1.50), seventh in assists per game (0.75) and fourth in total assists (6). 

Rajovic's name is found through the NCAA's active career leaders, including ninth in minutes player (5,482.53) and fourth in saves (265). 

SERIES HISTORY:

Since 2009, the Red Foxes hold a 6-2 record against the Peacocks, outscoring Saint Peter's 16-10 in the eight games. 

SCOUTING THE PEACOCKS:

Saint Peter's wrapped up non-conference play and come into the match with a 1-3-2 overall record. The Peacocks are coming off a 1-1 2OT tie vs Bucknell last Tuesday. 

Freshman Jordan Jowers leads the team with three goals, six points, 18 shots and is tied for second with seven shots on goal. 

Freshman goalie Robbie Anderson has played all six games in net and has given up nine goals to go along with 31 saves, a 1.36 goals against average and a .775 save percentage. 

As a team, Saint Peter's has scored six goals, while giving up nine goals to opponents through six games this season.
