Football Opens Home Schedule With Early PFL Opener

Red Foxes Host Stetson Saturday At Tenney Stadium

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team opens its home schedule on Saturday, when the Red Foxes (0-1) host Stetson (0-1) at Tenney Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Not only is Saturday the Red Foxes' home opener, it is also their Pioneer Football League opener. Only once in its previous eight seasons in the league have the Red Foxes played a PFL opener as early as the second week of the season. In fact, the last time it occurred was Week Two of the 2009 season, which was Marist's first PFL game in program history against Drake.

Marist is opening its 11th season of play at Tenney Stadium, and first on its new FieldTurf Revolution 360 playing surface, which includes logos in both end zones and midfield. The Red Foxes will have a total of five home games in the 2017 season.

Here's a closer look at Saturday's contest:

Preseason Recognition
Marist was picked third in the Pioneer Football League Preseason Poll, its highest preseason projection in its nine years in the league. The Red Foxes had seven Preseason All-PFL honorees, which tied San Diego for the league's highest total.

Last Time Out
Marist opened the 2017 season with a 45-6 loss at Bucknell on Sept. 2. Fifth-year senior running Marcellus Calhoun had the Red Foxes' lone score with a four-yard run in the second quarter, which capped a 16-play, 97-yard drive. Red-shirt sophomore nose tackle Eddie Zinn-Turner had a team-high six tackles (including half a sack) as the Red Foxes held the Bison to 56 rushing yards on 39 carries.

About Stetson
The Hatters were defeated by a score of 42-3 at Sacred Heart in their season opener last Saturday. Stetson was picked to finish ninth in the PFL Preseason Poll, with linebacker Jeb Boudreaux earning Preseason All-League honors. Last season, the Hatters went 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the PFL. Head coach Roger Hughes is in his sixth season at Stetson, and is the program's only coach after it re-started following a 57-year hiatus.

Did You Know?
Stetson head coach Roger Hughes worked with Marist head men's basketball Mike Maker for eight years at Dartmouth. Hughes was Dartmouth's offensive coordinator from 1992-99, while Maker was assistant and then associate head coach of the men's basketball team from 1991-2002.
