Marist Men’s Basketball Falls To Manhattan In OT

Parker, Knudsen Each Score Career Highs

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Despite career highs in scoring from junior guards Brian Parker (33 points) and David Knudsen (28 points), the Marist men's basketball fell to Manhattan 101-96 in overtime Tuesday night at McCann Arena.
 
Summary
The Red Foxes made four consecutive threes to take a 12-5 lead early on in the game. Down 22-10, the Jaspers went on an 8-0 run to cut Marist's lead. But the Red Foxes stayed hot from three-point range. Junior forward Ryan Funk made his fourth three of the game to bring Marist's lead to 43-31 with 30 seconds left in the half. Marist finished the half with 10 three-pointers, and led 44-32 after the first 20 minutes.
 
The Jaspers came out strong after the half, draining three three-pointers in a row to help cut Marist's lead down to 48-43. But the Red Foxes fought back, and a three-pointer by Knudsen with 11:18 to play gave Marist its largest lead at 62-49. Manhattan slowly ate away at Marist's lead, bringing the score within one point with 3:54 left in the game. Aaron Walker Jr.'s layup gave Manhattan its first lead of the game with 1:13 left. Tied 77-77 with 5 seconds left, Parker drained a three-pointer to give Marist back the lead. On the ensuing possession, Manhattan's Rich Williams was fouled shooting a three-pointer, and drained all three free throws. The game went to overtime tied at 80.
 
A three-point play by Zavier Turner gave Manhattan an 86-83 lead with 3:20 left in overtime, and gave the Jaspers the lead for good. Manhattan iced the game by going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute.
 
Key Stats
  • Parker's 33 points were a game high. He went 7-for-13 from the field, a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 16-for-21 from the free-throw line. He also had a team-high five assists.
  • Knudsen and sophomore center Tobias Sjoberg each had a team-high seven rebounds.
  • All nine Marist players who registered minutes scored.
  • Zane Waterman led five Jaspers in double digits with 23 points, and had a game-high 12 rebounds.
  • Manhattan had the advantage on steals (10-3) and blocks (2-0). The Jaspers had 12 turnovers, as compared to 20 for Marist.
  • Manhattan held a 44-14 advantage in points in the paint. However, Marist went 17-for-37 (.459) from three-point range, including 10-for-18 (.556) in the first half.
 
Notes
  • This was the second 30-point game of Parker's career. He scored 30 at Kent State on Nov. 21, 2015.
  • Parker also set career highs in free throws made and attempted.
  • Both Funk and Knudsen drained five three-pointers, matching career highs.
  • Knudsen's seven rebounds were a season high.

"I told our team that I can't remember a tougher loss than this one," head coach Mike Maker said. "We led just about the entire game. A lot credit has to go to Manhattan for their resiliency."

Marist falls to 3-11 and 1-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Manhattan improves to 7-7 and 2-0 in conference play.
