Marist Comes Up Just Short At Rider

Red Foxes Erase 16-Point First-Half Deficit, But Drop Game 60-57

LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The Marist men's basketball team took a second-half lead after overcoming a 16-point first-half deficit, but fell by a score of 60-57 at Rider in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Alumni Gymnasium on Saturday night.
 
Summary
  • Rider used a 13-0 run to jump out to a 16-point lead at 23-7 with 9:29 left in the first half. The Broncs led by 16 on two occasions in the first half.
  • Marist held Rider scoreless for 6:36, and limited the Broncs to just four points in the final 8:52 of the first half.
  • In the final three minutes of the first half, a pair of three-pointers by junior guard David Knudsen and one by freshman forward Lasse Gummerus brought Marist to within six. Rider's lead was 29-23 after the first 20 minutes.
  • A three-pointer by Knudsen with 17:51 to play tied the score at 30 apiece. Two free throws by freshman guard Austin Williams gave Marist a 34-32 lead with 14 minutes to go, and a layup by junior guard Brian Parker gave Marist its largest lead (36-32) at the 12:27 mark.
  • From that point, Rider scored six straight points to take the lead back. With 9:46 to play, a three-pointer by Jordan Allen gave the Broncs a 41-38 advantage, and they led the rest of the way.
  • Rider's lead grew to seven on five different occasions in the second half.
  • With 10.5 seconds remaining, Knudsen drained a long three-pointer to bring Marist within one. Anthony Durham hit a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession to give Rider a three-point lead, and the Red Foxes were unable to tie the game on the final possession.
 
Key Stats
  • Parker led all scorers with 19 points. He shot 6-for-11 from the field and 7-for-10 from the free-throw line, and added four points and three assists.
  • Knudsen gave Marist a second double-digit scorer with 18 points and six rebounds.
  • Senior center Connor McClenaghan tied Knudsen for the team lead with six rebounds. McClenaghan also drew two charges in the span of less than a minute.
  • Frederick Scott led Rider with 14 points, and added nine rebounds.
  • Durham had a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds), and also had five assists.
  • Marist shot 8-for-39 (.205) from three-point range.
 
Notes
  • Parker moved up to 18th place on the program's all-time scoring list. He now has 1,178 points in his career.
  • Six of Marist's seven MAAC games have been decided by six points or less.
  • Williams set a career high with three steals. He has nine steals in his last four games.
  • The 39 three-point attempts marked Marist's second-largest total of the season. The Red Foxes took 40 in their triumph at The Citadel on Dec. 1.

"We had 10 turnovers and were 4-for-21 from three in the first half, and down six at halftime, but we didn't fold," head coach Mike Maker said. "It's the same old song and dance. We haven't closed yet, but I think that's coming. It's been frustrating."

Marist is 4-15 overall and 2-5 in the MAAC. Rider is 13-7 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
