WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – A career night from Monmouth keeper Sean Murray seemed to spell victory for the Hawks, but a late goal from
Samad Bounthong sent the game into overtime and gave Marist the opportunity needed to take back the win.
- Marist's offense started off strong with three corner kicks and three shots in the first few minutes.
- Monmouth went on to control the first half, scoring via Anes Mrkulic in the 29th minute and holding a 7-3 shot advantage heading into the break.
- The Red Foxes came out strong in the second period, and fired 20 shots while holding Monmouth to three.
- With time dwindling down, David Nkansah-Siriboe drew the defenders and passed to Bounthong who launched a power shot that was initially stopped by keeper Sean Murray before bouncing into the goal for the tie.
- The Red Foxes held their momentum entering overtime, finding more chances before reigning Rookie of the Week Skylar Conway found a rushing Allen Gavilanes who beat Murray one-on-one for the game-winner.
- Marist outshot Monmouth 23-10 and shots-on-goal 13-4.
- Monmouth keeper Sean Murray had a impressive night, making 11 saves to keep the Red Foxes blank for most of the game in what could have been a high scoring night.
- Marist's defense allowed only 3 shots in over 55 minutes after the halftime break.
- Gavilanes scored his fourth goal of the season, while Bounthong tallied his third and Skylar Conway recorded his third assist.
- Marist remains tied for first in the MAAC with Quinnipiac and Fairfield who all have four wins each.
"This was always one I was worried about. They got a set-piece goal, and we had to claw our way back" remarked Coach Matt Viggiano following the win. "It was frustrating in the second half when we had a lot of chances. You hope eventually you get rewarded and finally we did. Their goalie really stood on his head. In the second half we had him on the ropes, and it felt like we just needed to land a knockout punch. When we finally did, it was a beautiful goal and we came away with three points, which is what really matters."
Men's soccer will host Manhattan on Saturday, October 13 at 7 p.m. The Jaspers recorded their third win tonight over previously undefeated Rider.
