POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Men's swimming and diving picked up a 178-116 meet victory against Canisius to start the season.
Marist had sweeps of a couple of events on the day. In the 1000-yard freestyle,
Michael O'Donovan,
John Hurley and
Brendan Rice finished 1-2-3. Later in the 200-yard backstroke,
Ryan Kaplan,
David Cantu and
Michael Presta finished in the top three.
Several of Marist's veteran swimmers had excellent starts to the season. Top distance swimmer
Michael O'Donovan picked up wins in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle and finished third in the 200-yard freestyle. Speedster
Daniel Knoll picked up wins in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.
Marist newcomers performed well and showed the great depth they will add to the squad. Pavel Makarchunk took first in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly.
Ryan Kaplan won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with times of 54.49 and 1:55.46.
The Red Foxes' two divers had excellent starts to the season.
Raislan Aiken won both the 1- and 3-meters with scores of 284.55 and 278.85.
David Gallino finished second on the 1-meter and had a personal best score in his third place finish on the 3-meter with a score of 221.77.
Marist will be back in competition next Thursday at Fordham. Meet time is set for 6 pm.
