WEST POINT, New York – The Marist men's basketball team was defeated by Army West Points in its season opener on Tuesday night by a score of 73-69 at Christl Arena.
- Marist jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first five-and-a-half minutes. The spurt included nine straight points by freshmen – four from Darius Hines, two from Luke Nedrow, and then a three-point by Matt Herasme.
- Army West Point took its first lead on the strength of a 12-0 run, which saw the Red Foxes go scoreless for 5:13.
- The Black Knights took a 33-27 lead at halftime, and ran their lead to a game-high 12 on a three-pointer by Jordan Fox with 15:08 to go. That shot gave Army West Point a 48-36 advantage.
- From that point, Marist went on a 15-2 run. The Red Foxes took their first lead of the second half on a pair of free throws by senior guard Brian Parker with 8:47 remaining.
- A steal by senior guard David Knudsen led to a fast break layup by sophomore guard Austin Williams, which gave Marist its largest second half lead at 61-55 with 5:29 left.
- The final three minutes brought five lead changes and two ties. With 14 seconds to go, Parker's jumper in the lane tied the score at 69. But Tommy Funk's three-pointer with 3.7 seconds left gave the Black Knights a 72-69 advantage.
- Parker finished with game highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds.
- Senior forward Ryan Funk had 10 points, all of which came in the second half.
- Marist shot 27-for-52 (.519) from the field, 3-for-15 (.200) from three-point range, and 12-for-24 (.500) from the free-throw line.
- Matt Wilson led Army West Point with 24 points, and tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Wilson did not miss from the field (8-for-8).
- Marist held a 36-28 advantage in rebounds.
- Army West Point committed just six turnovers, while Marist had just 12.
- Parker had his 23rd career game with at least 20 points, his ninth with at least 10 rebounds, and his ninth career double-double.
