Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with a Win

Mehalick leads the Red Foxes in Scoring With a Career Day

WEST POINT, New York – The women's lacrosse team played a back and forth game against Army to open the season Saturday morning, coming out on top a 14-11 victory. Samantha Mehalick led the Red Foxes, scoring a career high six goals.
 
Summery
Army opened up the game scoring in a little over a minute. Both teams remained scoreless for the next ten minutes with Marist struggling to complete clear attempts. Army broke the ice to take a 2-0 lead but Marist won the following draw control and Lauren Mazza scored to put the Red Foxes on the board. Army would score two goals in under forty seconds to take their largest lead of the game.
 
The two teams went back and forth through most of the first half. Samantha Mehalick scored two goals in 22 seconds to cut Army's lead to one with 4:47 left. Both teams scored once more to close out the half 7-6 Army.
 
Mazza tied it up on a free possession shot to bring the score to 7-7. Army responded scoring two goals in 15 seconds to force the Red Foxes into a timeout. Both teams exchanged goals to bring the score to 10-8. The Red Foxes went on a 5-0 run and held the Minutemen scoreless for almost 18 minutes.
 
During the run, Mehalick scored her sixth goal of the game to tie it up and Kelly George scored her first career goal to take an 11-10 lead. Army scored again with 4:41 left in the game but Morgan Jaycox scored on the next possession to give the Red Foxes a three point cushion to finish the game.
