Marist Minute (Feb 6)

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Red Fox Network's Marist Minute highlights this past week's events and provides an upcoming schedule for this week.

Women's basketball extended their winning streak to six games this week, picking up two nice wins at McCann Arena. Their first win was on Thursday, Feb 1, when they took down Iona 75-55. Then on Saturday, Feb 3, the team won 73-54 over Siena. Sophomore Rebekah Hand saw her consecutive free throws made streak end at 52 against the Saints, which is tied for 7th in NCAA Division 1 history.

Men's basketball played three games this week, and ended up 1-2 over that span. They took down Manhattan 62-59 on Tuesday, Jan 30, with help from a game-winning three by junior Ryan Funk with .8 seconds left on the clock. Both losses came over the weekend at McCann Arena, as they suffered a 73-67 defeat to Canisius on Friday, Feb 2, and a 98-64 defeat to Iona on Sunday, Feb 4.

Men's Lacrosse opened their season on Saturday, but came up just short against Bucknell, losing 11-9. Red-shirt senior goalkeeper Brian Corrigan had 10 saves in the opener, and even scored his first career goal.

Water polo participated in the Bruno Classic on Saturday evening, playing two total games. They won their first game of the season 11-8 against #25 Brown, but earlier in the day they lost 13-3 to #19 Harvard. 

Men's and women's track & field both competed in the Metropolitan Championships on Friday, held at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. For the men, sophomore Matthew Hawker was the highest individual finisher, placing ninth in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 1:58:63. For the women, the 3,200-meter relay team earned a spot in the ECAC Championships with its third-place performance. The team of Kerry Gaye, Denise Grohn, Jenna Robinson and Gianna Mastromatteo compiled a time of 9:23.38, exceeding the standard of 9:25.24.

Women's Tennis suffered two tough losses over the weekend, losing 6-1 to St. John's on Friday, and falling 7-0 to UConn on Sunday.
