POUGHKEEPSIE, New York- The Marist Women's Basketball team will face Canisius Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
PLAY4KAY
This will be the annual "Play4Kay" game, with a special ceremony at halftime to honor breast cancer survivors. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation and help raise breast cancer awareness. The athletic department will be giving out free pink t-shirts to the first 1,000 fans.
PREVIOUS OUTING
The Red Foxes are coming off of an 85-57 win against MAAC rival Monmouth. Sophomore
Rebekah Hand led the foxes with 29 points resulting in 9-for-14 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from three. Three other foxes contributed double figures along with Hand. Red-Shirt Sophomore
Grace Vander Weide tied her career-high with 17 points,
Allie Best scored 12 points and
Maura Fitzpatrick added 10. Overall, Marist went 12-for-18 from three and 25-for-34 from the line. The Red Foxes forced Monmouth into 19 turnovers scoring 21 points off.
LAST MATCHUP AGAINST CANISIUS
The Red Foxes travelled to Buffalo on January 28, 2018 and came away with a 78-53 victory. The Red Foxes took an early 13-3 lead thanks to two triples from
Grace Vander Weide.
Alana Gilmer scored 11 points in the first quarter on 4-for-5 shooting, as the Red Foxes shot over 60% from the field and hit 5-of-their-7 attempts from the three to lead 27-19 after one. Marist shot an even 50% in the first half and held Canisius without a field goal for a near four minute stretch in the third, increasing their lead to as high as 22 points. With just over two minutes to go in the third quarter, a three pointer in the corner by Vander Weide broke a scoreless drought for the Red Foxes and pushed the lead back to 61-44. Marist finished the game shooting 45% from the field and 39% from three.
SCOUTING THE GRIFFS
The Griffs 8-16 overall and 6-7 in the MAAC conference this season. The Griffs are coming off a Friday night loss to the Quinnipiac Bobcats before previously winning their last two games against Saint Peter's and Niagara. Sara Hinriksdottir currently leads the team scoring over 14 points per game but is the only Canisius player averaging double-digits.
DEFENDING THE DEN
The Red Foxes have used the electric atmosphere of McCann Arena to their advantage this season, compiling an 8-2 record at home, including a perfect 6-0 record in conference games. Marist is averaging 69 points per game at home. The Red Foxes also put up 117 points in the charity exhibition game against Bloomfield College back in November.
