SPARTANBURG, South Carolina --Â The Marist baseball team returns to South Carolina for the first time since its season opening series for a three game set at the Wofford College Terriers.Â
Due to impending weather on Sunday, the Red Foxes and Terriers will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. with the second game beginning approximately 30 minutes after the completion of Game 1. The two teams will then wrap up the series with a single game on Monday (6 p.m.).
LAST TIME OUT:
The team is coming off its first win of 2018, a 10-7 victory at the UNC Greensboro Spartans.Â
For the third consecutive game, Marist opened the scoring. In the bottom of the second inning, redshirt seniorÂ
Greg Kocinski laced a one out single to center and redshirt juniorÂ
Chris Tracz followed with a double down the right field line. SeniorÂ
Matt Iantosca followed with an RBI ground out to first, scoring Kocinski and it was 1-0 Red Foxes.
The Spartans answered in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back hit by pitches to open the inning and three batters later, the runners advanced to second and third and scored on a stolen base and throwing error by the catcher to even the score. The next batter laced an RBI single up the middle at UNC Greensboro was ahead 2-1.
Marist regained the lead in the top of the third with a one out single by redshirt juniorÂ
Jordan Roper and a double by juniorÂ
Randy Taveras. During the net at bat, Roper scored and Taveras advanced to third on a wild pitch and then Taveras scored on a second wild pitch to give the Red Foxes the 3-2 lead.
For the third straight inning, Marist scored in the top of the fourth when Kocinski led off with a single, Tracz followed with a walk and then a wild pitch advanced them to second and third. Iantosca followed with an RBI sac bunt that scored Kocinski and it was 4-2 in favor of the visitors.
The Spartans answered with five runs, four of which were unearned, in the bottom of the fourth inning with the help of four errors by the Red Foxes to take the 7-4 lead.
After a scoreless, fifth, Marist answered in the top of the sixth when seniorÂ
Andrew Rouse led off with a single, Kocinski followed with a double and Tracz knocked in Rouse with an RBI ground out. Iantosca and freshmanÂ
Reece Armitage walked to load the bases and freshmanÂ
Nick Cantone picked up an RBI hit by pitch that scored Kocinski. Roper followed with a two RBI single up the middle and two batters later, Rouse picked up an RBI on another bases loaded hit by pitch and it was 9-7 Red Foxes.
UNC Greensboro threatened in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs but senior redshirt juniorÂ
Tony Romanelli entered the game and quickly slammed the door with back-to-back strikeouts swinging and a fly out to right field to end the threat.
Marist added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Kocinski single, Tracz sac bunt and an Iantosca RBI single, before Romanelli held the Spartans scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to secure his first save of the year and the 10-7 Red Fox victory.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS:
Wofford enters the series with an overall record of 7-6 and are coming off a 12-10 win vs Boston College on Wednesday.
Senior Mack Nathanson leads the team with a .405 average, 17 hits, four home runs, 15 RBI a .786 slugging percentage and a .536 on base percentage.Â
Senior LHP Adam Scott, junior LHP Austin Higginbotham and senior RHP Grant Byers are slated to start for the Terriers on the hill. Scott enters the series at 1-1 with a 5.68 ERA. In 19 innings pitched, he has given up 13 runs (12 earned) on 19 hits with three walks, 30 strikeouts and a .250 batting average against.Â
Higginbotham stands at 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA. In 20.1 innings pitched, he has given up 10 runs (eight earned) on 20 hits with six walks, 17 strikeouts and a .260 batting average against.Â
Byers enters the series at 1-1 with a 2.76 ERA. In 16.1 innings pitched, he has given up five runs on 11 hits with five walks, 13 strikeouts and a .196 batting average against.Â
