Baseball Beats Towson 9-1 For First Series Opening Win

TOWSON, Maryland – The Marist baseball team picked up its second win of the season on Friday with a 9-1 win over the Towson Tigers.

The victory marks the second most runs the Red Foxes have scored this season and the second time Marist has won when averaging one run scored per inning played in a single game.

SUMMARY:

The Red Foxes got on the board first in the top of the first inning when junior Randy Taveras reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and stole second during the next at bat. Two batters later, junior Frankie Gregoire drove in Taveras with an RBI single through the left side and advanced to second on the throw home. Senior Andrew Rouse followed with an RBI single that scored Gregoire and it was 2-0 Marist.

Three innings later, the Red Foxes added a run when Rouse led off with a double down the third base line and advanced to third on a ground out. Two batters later, freshman Reece Armitage knocked in Rouse with ground out for his first career RBI and the 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, junior Anthony Lazar doubled to left center and advanced to third and scored on a wild pitch.

Marist added five more runs in the seventh and eighth innings on an RBI sac bunt by redshirt senior Greg Kocinski, an Armitage RBI single, a Lazar RBI sac fly and two wild pitches.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the ninth with a double and RBI single but freshman Trevor Backman closed the door for the 9-1 win.

  • The Tigers left 8 runners on base while Marist left 7
  • Red Fox leadoff hitters batted .778 (7-for-9) while Towson leadoff batters hit .444 (4-for-9)

  • Redshirt junior Tony Romanelli pitched a career high 6 innings
