TOWSON, Maryland --Â The Marist baseball team heads to Towson University for a three game series vs the Towson Tigers this weekend.
The Red Foxes and Tigers will play on Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.)
LAST TIME OUT:
Marist is coming off a 9-4 loss at the Wofford Terriers on Monday evening.Â
For the second straight game, the Red Foxes opened the scoring. In the top of the second inning seniorÂ
Andrew Rouse led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch during the next at bat. Two batters later, seniorÂ
Matt Iantosca singled through the left side to set up men on first and third and freshmanÂ
Gene Napolitano drove in Rouse with an RBI groundout to give Marist the early 1-0 lead.
The Terriers answered in the bottom of the inning with a back-to-back leadoff singles and a walk two batters later loaded the bases. After the next batter struck out swinging, an RBI single to left field scored two and gave Wofford a 2-1 lead.
The Red Foxes reclaimed the lead in the top of the third when redshirt juniorÂ
Jordan Roper doubled with one out and juniorÂ
Randy Taveras drove him in with an RBI double. Redshirt seniorÂ
Greg Kocinski followed with an RBI single that scored Taveras and gave Marist a 3-2 lead.
For the second straight inning, the Terriers answered in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff solo homerun to left center to even the score. Two batters later, a double to left center was followed by a fly out that advanced the runner to third and a walk. With men on first and third, a throwing error by the catcher allowed the runner from third to score and give Wofford a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Iantosca tied the score at 4-4 with solo home run to left field, his first of the season and second of his career.
However, for the third time in the game the Terriers answered in the bottom of the inning with a one out walk, followed by a single. After a Red Fox pitching change, back-to-back RBI singles and an RBI ground out gave Wofford a 7-4 lead.
Single runs in the seventh and eighth inning put the score at 9-4 when Marist came to bat in the ninth inning, but a comeback was not in the deck as the Red Foxes struck out swinging, were thrown out at second on a single, walked and flied out to end the game.
In the game:
- Iantosca extended his hitting streak to six games
- Roper extended his hitting streak to five games
- Kocinski extended his hitting streak to four games
- Junior Anthony Lazar picked up his first two hits of the season and first double of the campaign as well
- Sophomore Connor McNamara pitched a career high 5.1 innings
- Freshman Gene Napolitano recorded his first career RBI
METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCEÂ LEADERS:
Iantosca is third in the MAAC with a .419 batting average and is tied for seventh with a .455 on base percentage
Kocinski is third in the conference with a .632 slugging percentage, is tied for seventh with a .455 on base percentage and is ninth with a .368 batting average.Â
Senior
Mike Coss is sixth in the MAAC with a 1.84 ERA, is tied for sixth with 18 strikeouts and is seventh with a .226 opponent batting average against
Taveras is tied for first in the conference with four stolen bases.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS:
Towson is 3-12 on the season and is coming off a 6-4 loss vs UMBC on Wednesday.
Junior Richie Palacios leads the team with a .368 average, 22 hits, 22 runs scored, seven doubles, a .527 on base percentage, a .667 slugging percentage and six stolen bases and is tied for first with three home runs and 13 RBI.
On the mound, the Tigers are led by starters Gavin Weyman, David Marriggi and Michael Adams.
Weyman is 0-3 with a 6.59 ERA. In 13.2 innings pitched, he has given up 11 runs (10 earned) on 15 hits with six walks, eight strikeouts and a .294 opponent batting average against.Â
Marriggi is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA. In 19.1 innings pitched, he has given up 11 runs (10 earned) on 20 hits with 15 walks, 18 strikeouts and a .274 opponent batting average against.Â
Adams is 0-2 with an 8.05 ERA. In 19 innings pitched, he has given up 23 runs (17 earned) on 27 hits with 13 walks, 21 strikeouts and a .314 opponent batting average against.Â
