BOILING SPRINGS, NORTH CAROLINA - The Marist softball team played two games on Friday in its first two contests in the Red And Black Tournament, defeating North Carolina Central 2-1 and losing to Gardner Webb 5-1.
SUMMARY OF NC CENTRAL
The Red Foxes hung on to win a nail-biter 2-1. Junior
Kallen Leeseberg pitched 6.1 innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts and she stranded six runners on base to claim the win. Junior
Megan Beiermeister came in to slam the door and get the save with runners on second and third. On the offensive side, freshman
Caroline Baratta had two hits and a steal from the leadoff spot. Sophomore
Jade Sinskul and senior
Kourtney Paul drove in the two runs. Senior
Brittany Colombo had a key defensive play in the bottom of the 7th, cutting down the tying run at home plate.
KEY STATS
- Leeseberg induced 10 ground ball outs, five strikeouts, and one fly out.
- Freshman Hunter Hand scored one run as a pinch runner. Paul scored the other run.
- Both teams left six runners on base, but Marist took advantage of three Eagle errors to pull ahead.
SUMMARY OF GARDNER-WEBB
Marist fell to Gardner-Webb 5-1. The offense racked up 12 hits (all singles) but stranded 14 runners on base. The lone Marist run was scored by Baratta in the first inning. She singled, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice groundout by red-shirt sophomore
Claire Oberdorf, and scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore
Ali Milam. In the circle, Beiermeister pitched six innings, gave up five runs (three earned), three walks, and six strikeouts.
KEY STATS
- Beiermeister induced eight groundouts, six strikeouts, and two flyouts.
- Baratta, Milam, and senior Miranda Perez each had two hits.
- Oberdorf, Colombo, Paul, Hand, freshman Olivia Knopf, and junior Brandi Coon each had one hit.
NOTES
- Baratta racked up four hits in seven at bats today. She is now hitting .478 (11-23) on the season.
- Sinskul went 1-for-3 today, and she is now batting .467 this year.
- Milam drove in her fourth run of the season against Gardner-Webb, tying her for the team lead with Baratta.
- Leeseberg struck out 5 vs NC Central, giving her a team high of 14 Ks.
- Beiermeister struck out seven today (six vs Gardner-Webb, one vs NC Central) giving her 12 on the season. She is second behind Leeseberg in Ks.
