Wagner Breaks Draw Control Record in Loss

Yale Came Back From Behind to Claim a Victory

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Women's lacrosse dropped a heartbreaker at Yale 13-12 Tuesday night. The Red Foxes fall to 4-4 while Yale improves to 7-3.
 
Hailey Wagner broke the career draw control record, getting her 269th draw control in the second half of the game. She breaks the record previously held by Jamie Romano
 
SUMMARY
Both team's offenses took their time to set up while on the attack. Hailey Wagner got on the board first with a free position goal. The two teams went back and forth to tie it up 2-2 ten minutes into the game before the Red Foxes went on a 6-0 run. The offense was methodic with 12 of 13 of the shots taken on goal. Marist took full advantage of free position shots going 7-for-8 in the first half. The Red Foxes took a 9-4 lead going into the half.
 
Yale's Olivia Markert scored two goals in the first 90 seconds of the second half to cut into Marist's lead. The two teams exchanged goals to bring the score 11-8 with 22:45 remaining. Neither team could find the back of the net for the next ten minutes with Delaney Galvin making clutch saves and Yale's defense playing cleaner and limiting free position opportunities.
 
With 12:01 left the Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run to take 12-11 lead and their first of the day. Lauren Mazza immediately responded to the last goal to tie it up 12-12. Marist started the following possession women down and the defense held strong throughout the penalty but Yale found the back of the net to take a 13-12 lead with 2:49. Marist had one final opportunity to send the game into overtime with a minute left on the clock but shots by Samantha Mehalick, Wagner and Camille Renaud came up short.

  • Mehalick lead the team with four goals.
  • Wagner finished the day with four points from three goals and one assist while adding six draw controls.
  • Galvin and the defense did a good job preventing free position goals, holding Yale to 3-of-13.
  • Yale outshot Marist in the second half 23 to 13.
 
NOTES
  • Renaud had career highs in ground balls (6) and draw controls (4).
  • Lauren Mazza's two caused turnovers is a new career high.
