Baseball Welcomes UMass Lowell in Non-Conference Home Opener

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York -- The Marist baseball team welcomes the UMass Lowell River Hawks to McCann Field on Wednesday for its non-conference home opener at 3 p.m.

The Red Foxes and River Hawks were originally scheduled to play at Lelacheur Park in Lowell, MA at 3:30 p.m. but the game was rescheduled to McCann Field at 3 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT:

Marist is coming off a 4-3 10th inning walk off win vs the Monmouth Hawks on Sunday, courtesy of an RBI single by junior Randy Taveras, that gave the Red Foxes their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series victory of the season after the two teams split Saturday's DH with the Hawks winning Game 1 13-6 and Marist winning Game 2 5-3.

The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when freshman Reece Armitage led off with a single to center and junior Anthony Lazar reached on a fielding error by the third baseman that advanced Armitage to third. Senior Andrew Rouse followed with an RBI sac bunt that scored Armitage and advanced Lazar to second and junior Frankie Gregoire laced an RBI single to left that scored Lazar to give Marist a 2-0 lead.

One inning later, a solo home run to by Armitage to right field gave the Red Foxes a 3-0 lead.

The Hawks got on the board in the top of the eight with a leadoff double to left field, before the runner advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI ground out to the shortstop to bring the score to 3-1 Marist.

In the top of the ninth inning, Monmouth rallied to tie the game with a walk, single, a wild pitch, an RBI ground out and an RBI sac fly to left field.

The game then went to extra innings and in the bottom of the 10th, redshirt senior Greg Kocinski led off with a double to right center and freshman Nick Cantone was hit by a pitch. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Kapuscinski walked, redshirt junior Jordan Roper was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Taveras smacked a game winning RBI single through the left side to give the Red Foxes the 4-3 walk off win.

SERIES HISTORY VS UMASS LOWELL:

This is the third straight year Marist has played the River Hawks as the designated "home" team and hold a 2-0 record in the series.

In 2016, the two teams played at McCann Field with the Red Foxes picking up a 6-3 win on March 30th.

Last season, the two teams were scheduled to play again at McCann Field, however, due to field conditions the game was rescheduled to Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, NY. Marist held a 4-2 lead going into the top of the sixth inning when UMass Lowell rallied for three runs to take a 5-4 lead. The Red Foxes tied the game in the bottom of the eighth and the game went into extra innings after neither team was able to score in the ninth. The game went into the 13th inning before a game winning RBI single by then sophomore Anthony Lazar scored then senior Matt Pagano from third to give Marist the 6-5 walk off win.
