Women's Tennis Clinches MAAC Championship Spot

Red Foxes Down Stags 5-2 In Final Home Match

WAPPINGERS FALLS, New York – The Marist women's tennis team clinched a spot in the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships with a 5-2 win over the Fairfield Stags Thursday afternoon.

The Red Foxes, down their no. 1 player due to illness, were behind the eight ball early as they dropped the doubles point after losing at no. 1 and no. 2 positions. Claire Schmitz and Elizabeth Brozovich were able to win at the third position, 6-3, but not before the Stags earned the first point.

In singles, Marist flipped the script, winning from five of the six positions to earn the overall match victory. Brozovich made quick work of her match, winning 6-1, 6-1 at the six position.

Chloe Lant playing from the first spot made the match 2-1 in the Red Foxes favor after winning 6-3, 6-2 over Fairfield's Diana Pinos. The match would be tied again after Sophia Moeller fell to Anna Komer,7-5, 6-3 at the six spot but the Red Foxes would win the remainder of the matches.

Amy Galloway picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at the fifth position to put Marist ahead and then Sam Galu would clinch the match in a three-setter, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 over Jessica Pill.

With the match ultimately decided, Claire Schmitz battled from the second position against Fairfield's Emily Lombardi. After winning the first set 7-6 (1) but then dropping the second set 6-3, Schmitz fought back and earned the Red Foxes' fifth point 12-10 after being down 9-4 at one point in the 10-point tiebreak.

The Red Foxes will hit the road to play their last MAAC game of the season against Siena College this Sunday at 12:00PM in Loudonville, NY.
