Baseball Splits DH at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist baseball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 4-1 win at the Iona Gaels in Game 1 of Saturday's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader but fell in Game 2 by a final score of 2-0.

GAME 1 SUMMARY:

The Gaels opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two out walk, followed by an RBI double to left center that gave Iona a 1-0 lead.

The Red Foxes answered in the top of the sixth when redshirt senior Greg Kocinski knocked a two out double to left center. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Kapuscinski then singled through the left side and then junior Frankie Gregoire reached on an error by the first baseman that allowed Kocinski to score and even the game at 1-1. Junior Randy Taveras walked to load the bases and redshirt junior Chris Tracz followed with an RBI walk that scored Kapuscinski. During the next at bat, a wild pitch allowed Gregoire to score from third and Marist held the 3-1 lead.

One inning later, the Red Foxes extended their lead when senior Andrew Rouse and Kocinski laced back-to-back singles with two outs, before Kapuscinski ripped an RBI single up the middle that scored Rouse and gave Marist a 4-1 lead.

The combination of redshirt junior Tony Romanelli and sophomore Skyler Pichardo then kept the Gaels off the board and the Red Foxes emerged with the 4-1 victory.

GAME 2 SUMMARY:

For the second straight game, Iona opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff single was followed by a stolen base and a throwing error on the catcher allowed the runner to advance to third. After a strikeout, the next batter then reached on a fielding error by the shortstop that allowed the run to score and gave the Gaels a 1-0 lead.

One inning later, a one out double followed by a walk and a single to right field loaded the bases. Then an RBI fielder's choice scored the run from third and gave Iona a 2-0 lead.

Marist looked to answer but were unable to collect more than two hits and the Gaels picked up the seven inning 2-0 win.
