Ninth Inning Rally Gives Baseball Series Win at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, New York – Behind a three run ninth inning rally, the Marist baseball team picked up its third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series win and eighth MAAC victory overall with a 4-3 win at the Iona Gaels on Sunday.

With the victory, the Red Foxes now stand at 18-15 (8-4 MAAC) overall.

SUMMARY:

Marist took the early lead in the top of the first inning when junior Anthony Lazar jacked an 0-2 solo home run to left field for his third home run this season and the 1-0 lead.

The Gaels then tied the game one inning later with back-to-back one out doubles to left center and left field and the game was even at 1-1.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth. Iona got a one out single to right and after a fly out and a Red Fox pitching change, the runner stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Gaels a 2-1 lead.

One inning later, a leadoff single was then followed by a pop out and fly out. During the following at bat, the runner stole second which was then followed by an RBI single through the right side that scored the runner to extend the Iona lead to 3-1.

Marist looked to rally in the top of the ninth and got back-to-back walks from freshman Reece Armitage and Lazar to start the inning. Senior Andrew Rouse then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt which also allowed Armitage to score and advanced Lazar to third and Rouse to second. Two batters later, redshirt sophomore Tyler Kapuscinski tied the game with an RBI sac fly to right field that scored Lazar, before a wild pitch during the next at bat allowed Rouse to score and gave the Red Foxes the 4-3 lead.

Holding the one run advantage, senior Mike Coss then slammed the door for Marist, striking out the side looking, looking and swinging to pick up his fifth victory of the season.
