Women's Lacrosse Seniors Shine in Loss

Marist’s Three Seniors had Strong Individual Performances but the Team Ultimately Fell to Iona

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Women's lacrosse dropped a close 12-11 game to Iona in its final regular season home game. The Red Foxes now sit at 9-6 overall and 5-2 in MAAC play.
 
Prior to the start of the game, Marist honored its three seniors, Lauren Mazza, Morgan Jaycox and Stefanie Wenz.
 
SUMMARY
Mazza scored minutes into the game to give Marist the lead. Iona immediately responded by winning the draw control and finding the back of the net to tie it up. Marist went on a 3-0 run with goals from Samantha Mehalick, Kelly George and Mazza to take a 4-1 lead with 20:50 left in the game. Iona called a timeout and scored on the next possession, but Marist responded with three unanswered goals to take a 7-2 with less than 12 minutes to go in the half.
 
Iona's offense started to pick up, scoring five unanswered goals to end the half. Pamela Giordano's free position goal with ten seconds left tied the game up 7-7.
 
Marist struck first in the second half, with Mehalick taking a great pass from George to score. The Red Foxes and the Gaels exchanged goals to bring the score to 9-8 for Marist before Iona scored four straight goals to take a 12-9 lead with 11:08. Devon Connolly scored back to back goals to come with one for the Red Foxes.
 
With four seconds left in the game, Mazza was fouled and placed on the eight meter line. Her shot was saved by Iona's Shannon McCaffrey and the Red Foxes weren't able to get another opportunity on offense.
 
STATS
  • Marist seniors had strong days on the field. Mazza finished with three goals, Jaycox and a goal and two assists and Wenz had a team high five ground balls.
  • Kelly George led with four points coming from one goal and three assists.
  • Delaney Galvin finished the day with 11 saves.
  • Iona's Pamela Giordano had a game high four goals and one assist.
  • Marist edged Iona in the draw circle, winning 17-of-25
