Women’s Soccer Drops MAAC Quarterfinals Heartbreaker

Quinnipiac Scores Three Straight To End Marist’s Season

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Sophomore forward Victoria Colatosti scored twice, but No. 5 Quinnipiac responded with three second-half goals to stun No. 4 Marist 3-2 in the 2019 MAAC Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.

The Red Foxes are eliminated from the MAAC Tournament, capping their season at 8-10-1 (5-4-1 MAAC record in the regular season). The Bobcats improve to 10-7-1 and will visit either top-ranked Monmouth or No. 2 Fairfield.

THE SUMMARY
  • Marist ignited the scoring in the 33rd minute. In transition, redshirt sophomore Kristen Prevosto sent the ball to Colatosti, who used her left foot to beat Quinnipiac netminder Meaghan Phillips by the right post.
  • Colatosti notched her second, receiving a pass from freshman defender Samantha Struno and firing it from the right side to the left of the net at 65:13.
  • Just 14 seconds later, however, Quinnipiac's Ally Grunstein fed Selena Salas, who finished to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • In the 71st minute, a Marist handball led to a 19-yard free kick for the Bobcats. Salas whipped it past the Red Fox wall and just inside the right post for the equalizer.
  • Gretchen Kron got credit for the game-winner with 5:42 left in the second half. Grunstein crossed into the box, and Kron poked her foot out to place a slow-roller into the net.
  • Colatosti almost found nylon in the final minute, but laced the shot high.

THE STATS
  • Quinnipiac held the advantage in shots at 15-6, including 11-4 in shots on goal.
  • Colatosti led Marist with three shots.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner had eight saves, including six in the opening stanza.
  • The Red Foxes were limited to only one corner kick.

THE NOTES
  • Colatosti finishes the season with a team-high seven goals and 16 points. The seven goals are the most for a Red Fox since 2016.
  • The effort is Colatosti's second game with multiple goals this year (Delaware State). In total, there were four multi-goal performances from Red Foxes in 2019 (Nicole Sasso vs. Niagara, Abby Murphy vs. Manhattan).
  • Sturno notched her first-career point.
  • This is Kelchner's fourth game with at least eight saves. She concludes her sophomore campaign with a 1.10 goals-against average and .854 save percentage.
  • This was the first postseason meeting between Marist and Quinnipiac.
