Men's Basketball Falls to Army West Point in Overtime

Sagl Drops Career-High 17 Points in Loss

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team was defeated in overtime, 66-64, by Army West Point in a non-conference game at McCann Arena on Saturday night.
 

Summary
  • Marist used a 12-2 first-half run, which included three-pointers by Matt Herasme and Tyler Sagl, to open up a 25-17 lead at the 5:54 mark.
  • The Black Knights outscored the Red Foxes 12-4 in the final 4:07 of the half, which tied the score at 31 after the first 20 minutes.
  • Matt Turner scored eight points in the first five minutes of the second half as the Red Foxes opened up a 44-37 lead with 14:31 to play.
  • Army West Point tied the game on two occasions, but the Red Foxes' lead jumped back to five on a three-pointer by Braden Bell with 30.5 seconds to play. But just six seconds later, a three-pointer by Lonnie Grayson cut the Red Foxes' lead to two.
  • The Black Knights then forced a tie-up, and had the possession arrow in their favor. Tommy Funk's basket with 11 seconds to play tied the score at 62, and the game went to overtime.
  • Bell hit a jump shot on the first possession of overtime, but the Red Foxes went scoreless the rest of the way. Alex King's dunk tied the score with 2:39 left in overtime. Matt Wilson's free throw with 1:53 left gave the Black Knights the lead, which increased to two on another Wilson free throw with 44 seconds left.
  • King then secured a defensive rebound with 10 seconds to play, and the Black Knights were able to dribble out the clock and prevail.

  • Sagl led all scorers with 17 points. He shot 5-for-7 from three-point range.
  • Four Red Foxes scored in double digits, as Sagl was followed by Bell (11), Turner (10), and Michael Cubbage (10).
  • Herasme had a team-high nine rebounds.
  • For Army West Point, Wilson had 16 points, a game-high 11 rebounds, and five assists. Funk finished with 14 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.
  • Army West Point had a 40-14 advantage in points in the paint.
  • There were eight lead changes and 11 ties.
 
Notes
  • The all-time series between the teams is now tied at 10 apiece. The Black Knights have won the last four.
  • Sagl's point total was a career high. He has now increased his scoring output in all five games this season.
  • Bell had career highs in points (11) and steals (four).
  • Herasme tied his career high in rebounds, set last game against The Citadel. Cubbage's eight boards were also a career high.
  • Three of Marist's five games have been decided by four points or less.
