Women’s Basketball Suffers First Loss at Central Michigan

Sarah Barcello Leads Red Foxes with Career-High 16 Points

MT. PLEASANT, Michigan – Marist women's basketball (5-1) was defeated at Central Michigan (3-3) by a final score of 77-54.

The matchup was tightly contested through the first half, but the Chippewas outscored the Red Foxes 23-11 in the third, going 5-of-6 from beyond the arc to pull away for the win.

Sarah Barcello led the Red Foxes with a career-performance as three players reached double-digit scoring.
 
SUMMARY
  • Central Michigan hit four of their first five shots to start the game and took a six point lead early in the first quarter.
  • The Red Foxes held the Chippewas scoreless for over four minutes and gained a 10-9 lead fueled by balanced scoring.
  • Central Michigan went on to shoot 50 percent from the field for the quarter, gaining a 20-17 lead at the break. Rebekah Hand paced Marist with nine points.
  • At the halfway point in the second, the Red Foxes had outscored the Chippewas 9-2. For the quarter, Grace Vander Weide and Sarah Barcello had four and five points respectively.
  • Coming out of the timeout, Central Michigan went on a 9-0 run to lead 31-26.
  • At the half, the Chippewas led 35-33. Barcello led the Red Foxes in scoring with a game-high 14 on 5-of-5 shooting. Rebekah Hand had contributed 11 points as well.
  • In the opening minutes of the third, Central Michigan hit four three-pointers to earn a 14-point lead.
  • Alana Gilmer took charge of the Red Foxes midway thorugh the quarter and made some strong plays to limit the Chippewas. However, Marist still trailed 58-44 at the end of the third.
  • Central Michigan continued rolling in the fourth, building up a 21-point lead. They had shot 6-for-7 from deep in the second half after 13 minutes.
  • The Red Foxes continued to fight as the game wound down, but they could not close the gap as the Chippewas outscored them 19-10 in the fourth.
STATS
  • Sarah Barcello scored a career-high 16 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting. She also recorded a career-best in rebounds with seven.
  • Alana Gilmer contributed 15 points, four rebounds, an assist and a block.
  • Rebekah Hand scored 15 points with four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
  • Central Michigan had a 50-29 edge in rebounding, and shot 39.1 percent from three while holding Marist to 12.5 percent.
NOTES
  • Rebekah Hand moved to sixth all-time in program history in free throws with her 326th in this outing. She is 14 away from Tori Jarosz '16 at fifth.
  • Rebekah Hand has reached double-digit scoring in every game this season, and Alana Gilmer has surpassed this threshold in five of six games.
