Baseball Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader at William & Mary

Tyler Kapuscinski Slammed First Home Run of Season in Game One

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia - Marist baseball (0-2) showed promise, but struggled to find their rhythm in the first two of their four-game series at William & Mary (2-0). The Tribe took game one 8-3, and the Red Foxes led for part of game two but ultimately fell 3-2.
 
GAME 1 SUMMARY
  • William & Mary started off the scoring in the first, recording three runs.
  • Marist loaded the bases in the second inning, but could not score until the third when Frankie Gregoire hit a double down the left field line to bring in Tyler Kapuscinski.
  • The Tribe scored another run in the third to bring their lead to 4-1.
  • Kapuscinski smashed a two-run homer in the fifth, driving in Randy Taveras to cut William & Mary's lead to 4-3.
  • In the seventh, the Tribe tallied two runs to extend their lead to 6-3.The Red Foxes had another chance in the eighth with a runner on base, but flew out. William & Mary went on to score two more runs and take the win. 
KEY STATS
  • Skyler Pichardo and Ryan Cardona each recorded two strikeouts on the mound. 
  • Kapuscinski tallied two hits and two RBI along with the home run.
GAME 2 SUMMARY
  • Alex Pansini started off strong for Marist, recording five strikeouts and allowing only two hits in six innings.
  • The Tribe capitalized on a steal opportunity to score a run in the fourth.
  • In the top of the fifth, Mike Casaleggio batted in Robbie Armitage on a fielder's choice to tie up the game.
  • The very next batter, Taveras, hit a single into deep right field to drive in Niko Amory and give the Red Foxes the 2-1 lead.
  • The Tribe scored a run in the sixth, but the two teams remained tied until the eighth when a home run gave William & Mary their second win of the day.
KEY STATS
  • Taveras hit a triple is his first appearance of the game and recorded two hits an an RBI in four at-bats. 
  • Robbie Armitage tallied four hits in eight appearances for the day. He tripled in the second game of the doubleheader and earned a run.
UP NEXT
The Red Foxes play the third game of the series with the Tribe tomorrow at 4 p.m. The fourth game takes place on Sunday at 1 p.m.
