Baseball Downed in Twinbill at Fairfield

Red Foxes Hit Three Home Runs in Doubleheader

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut - Marist baseball (9-14, 0-2 MAAC) was defeated in both ends of the doubleheader at Fairfield (11-12, 4-1 MAAC). The Red Foxes were downed 9-6 in game one, and dropped a shortened game two 4-2.
 
GAME ONE SUMMARY
  • Anthony Lazar hit his first homer of the season in the top of the third to give Marist the 1-0 lead.
  • Robbie Armitage singled to advance Frankie Gregoire to third and send Tyler Kapuscinski home.
  • On the next at bat, Reece Armitage hit a sac-fly to drive Gregoire home and lift Marist to a 3-0 advantage over Fairfield.
  • Robbie Armitage smashed a solo homer to right field in the fifth.
  • Lazar batted in Gene Napolitano in the fifth to extend the Marist lead.
  • Fairfield had a big sixth inning, using five hits and five walks to stack up nine runs and take a 9-5 lead.
  • In the eighth, Matt Rubayo doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch, but the Red Foxes were unable to add any more runs.
KEY STATS
  • Robbie Armitage went 3-for-4 overall with a home run, two RBIs, two stolen bases and one run scored.
  • Lazar went 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs, a double and one run scored.
  • Skyler Pichardo started on the mound and matched his season-high of 5.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts. He scattered six hits, recorded one walk and allowed two earned runs.
GAME TWO SUMMARY
  • Gene Napolitano opened the game with a two-run homer in the second, driving in Matt Rubayo.
  • The Stags answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer of their own.
  • Fairfield scored again in the third and the fifth to take the lead.
  • Marist placed multiple runners on base in the fifth and seventh but were unable to convert to extend the game past seven innings.
KEY STATS
  • Napolitano's homer was his second of the season. Marist as a whole is up to a MAAC-leading 16 long balls.
  • Tony Romanelli pitched the entire six innings, finishing with seven strikeouts and no walks but four runs.  
  • Marist tallied eight hits and held the Stags to seven.
