Marist Falls to Saint Peter’s in OT in MAAC Championships

Senior Brian Parker Leads All Scorers with 22 Points in Loss

ALBANY, New York – The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 71-68 loss in overtime to the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Thursday evening in the opening round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. With the loss, the careers of senior Brian Parker, Isaiah Lamb, Ryan Funk, and David Knudsen have come to a conclusion.  
 

Summary
  • After trading buckets early in the game, the Red Foxes took a 21-14 lead at the 8:01 mark after a quick 8-0 run. The run started after back-to-back threes from freshmen Luke Nedrow and Darius Hines, and then was finished off with two free throws from Lamb.  
  • Marist's lead grew to as large at 10 in the first half, but a 7-0 Saint Peter's run cut that lead to just three. Red-shirt junior Aleksandar Dozic answered the Peacocks' run with a three to give Marist a 31-25 lead. Parker made a layup as the game clock expired in the first half, giving the Red Foxes a 37-27 lead heading into the locker room.
  • Funk drilled a corner jumper just before the shot clock expired to give the Red Foxes their largest lead of the day, 13, with 15:06 remaining in the second half. Marist was held scoreless for the next 3:13, and Saint Peter's went on an 11-0 run to cut Marist's lead to just 46-44.
  • Saint Peter's took a 52-50 lead after a turnaround jumper by Manny Dixon with 9:44 remaining in the game. Both teams exchanged the lead a couple teams each, until Parker tied the game at 63 with a pair of free throws at the 1:58 mark.  
  • Both teams remained scoreless for the rest of the period, and Parker missed a game-winning layup attempt with just two seconds remaining. The game went to OT tied at 63.
  • The Peacocks and Red Foxes exchanged the lead three times early in OT, capped off by a dunk from Funk that gave Marist a 68-67 lead with 2:02 remaining.
  • Taylor Quinn gave Saint Peter's a 69-68 lead with 41 seconds left, as he converted a layup off a feed from Dallas Watson.
  • Dozic missed a go-ahead jumper with three seconds remaining, and Saint Peter's went on to win the game 71-68.
 
Key Stats
  • Parker led all scorers with 22 points, on 9-for-15 shooting. He added five rebounds and four assists.
  • Davauhnte Turner led the Peacocks with 18 points (16 of which came in the 2nd half and OT). Turner scored 11 straight points for Saint Peter's at one point in the second half.
  • Funk and Dozic joined Parker in double digits with 18 points and 11 points, respectively.
  • The Peacocks out rebounded the Red Foxes, 30-27.
  • Saint Peter's shot .511 (24-for-47) from the field, while Marist shot .429 (24-for-56). However, the Red Foxes shot better from three point, shooting .421 (8-for-19) from beyond the arc, while the Peacocks shot .316 (6-for-19).
Notes
  • Marist is now 11-22 all-time in the MAAC Championship.
  • Parker had his 100th career double-digit scoring game.
  • Parker also had his 26th career 20-point game, and his 22 points marked his second highest total of the season.
  • Marist is now 2-4 in overtime contests over the past two seasons.
  • The Red Foxes were 0-15 this season when having a shooting percentage lower than their opponent.

 "I think we grew a tremendous amount," head coach John Dunne said. "They understand the energy level it takes to win, and what needs to be put into winning. We didn't always execute to the best of our ability, but I think we grew a lot."
 
Records
  • Marist finishes the 2018-19 season with a 12-19 record overall.
  • Saint Peter's improves to 10-21 overall and will advance to play #1 Iona in the quarterfinal round on Friday night.
