Baseball Sweeps Series-Clinching Doubleheader at Manhattan

Red Foxes Erupt in Tenth Inning of Rubber-Match for Victory

FISHKILL, New York - Marist baseball (17-20, 7-5 MAAC) won both games of the twinbill at Manhattan (15-24, 8-4 MAAC) to take the series and end the Jasper's streak of eight-consecutive MAAC victories. Marist won game one 6-4, and then took game two in a ten-inning stunner.
 
GAME ONE SUMMARY
  • Marist scored early on a pair of doubles from Tyler Kapuscinski and Robbie Armitage. Kapuscinski reached home to put Marist on the board.
  • Manhattan answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning and then another in the second to lead 3-1.
  • In the third, Randy Taveras hit a double and then Kapuscinski batted him in with an RBI-single to center field.
  • Reece Armitage hit a big triple into right field and drove in Frankie Gregoire and Kapuscinski to take back a 4-3 advantage for the Red Foxes.
  • Manhattan scored in the fourth to tie the game.
  • Gregoire batted in Robbie Armitage in the fifth, and then Brian Hart singled to left center to drive in Gregoire to give Marist a 6-4 lead.
  • Ryan Cardona closed out the game with 2.0 innings of relief for the save.
KEY STATS
  • Reece Armitage recorded two RBIs on 1-of-3 hitting with a triple and a walk.
  • Tyler Kapuscinski was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a double and a walk.
  • Tony Romanelli earned the win, tossing 5.0 innings and striking out ten while allowing three runs.
  • Ryan Cardona threw 2.0 innings and allowing just one hit. He struck out two and did not give up any walks.
 
GAME TWO SUMMARY
  • The Jaspers started off strong with a run in the first inning.
  • Patrick Lightner singled to left field in the second and drove in Gene Napolitano to tie the game.
  • Kapuscinski scored on a passed ball in the fifth and the Red Foxes took a one-run advantage.
  • Manhattan added a pair of runs in the seventh to move in front 3-2.
  • Randy Taveras came up big in the top of the ninth with a 2-RBI single to right field to go ahead 4-3 in the final inning. Lightner and Hart were driven home.
  • Manhattan was able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning and extend the game.
  • Marist took control in the top of the tenth with a 2-RBI single from Niko Amory and then a 2-RBI double from Kapuscinski to lead 8-4.
  • The bases became loaded once again, and Reece Armitage smacked a huge 3-RBI double to right center field to give Marist an 11-4 lead in the tenth. Robbie Armitage, Kapuscinski and Taveras all scored.
  • Nick Cantone retired the side in the bottom of the inning and earned the win as Marist took home the victory.

  • Niko Amory recorded two RBIs and a run scored as well.

  • Nick Cantone closed out the game, striking out three and allowing no hits in 1.2 innings of work.
