Marist Splits Doubleheader With Niagara

Red Foxes Erupt For 19 Runs In Game One Triumph

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist baseball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader with Niagara on Saturday afternoon at McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes defeated Niagara 19-3 in game one but fell in game two by a score of 5-3.

Marist moves to 19-21 overall on the season, and 8-6 in the MAAC.

Game One Summary
  • Frankie Gregoire opened the scoring, blasting a three-run homer to deep left field in the bottom the first.
  • Marist tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second. After Niko Amory drove in a run on a safety squeeze, Anthony Lazar gave the Red Foxes a 6-0 lead after blasting a two-run homer to center.
  • Niagara scored a run on an error in the top of the third, but Marist answered with two in the bottom of the frame after a successful double steal and an RBI double by Reece Armitage.
  • The Red Foxes extended their lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth after RBI singles by Randy Taveras and Gregoire.
  • Marist scored for the fifth straight inning in the bottom of the fifth after Tyler Kapuscinski capped a two-out rally with a three-run homer to left. This gave the Red Foxes a 13-2 lead.
  • The Red Foxes scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, highlighted by a Robbie Armitage three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. Marist would go on to win 19-3.
Game One Stats
  • Everyone in Marist's starting lineup had at least one hit and scored at least one run.
  • Alex Pansini picked up the win for Marist, throwing eight innings and allowing just two earned runs and five hits, while striking out 8.
  • Lazar was 2-for-3 with two walks, a homer, two RBIs and four runs scored.
  • Gregoire led Marist with four RBIs, and added two hits, two runs, and a walk.
  • Michael Gabriele went 2-for-4 with a walk for Niagara.
Game Two Summary
  • Niagara struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by Dawson Bailey.
  • The Purple Eagles tacked on another run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Joe Tevlin.
  • A three-run homer by Robbie Armitage put the Red Foxes in front by a score of 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Niagara tied the game at three in the top of the sixth on a sac fly from Josh Marchese.
  • The Purple Eagles would then take the lead on a two-run homer from Peter Battaglia in the top of the seventh. Niagara would go on to win 5-3.
Game Two Stats
  • Tony Romanelli went 5.1 innings for Marist, allowing two earned runs on six hits. He added five strikeouts and just one walk.
  • Matthew Brash started for the Purple Eagles, and went 4.2 innings, and also just allowed two earned runs. He gave up five hits and struck out seven.
  • Battaglia went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Lazar went 2-for-3 in the loss, with a walk and a run scored. Combined on the day he went 4-for-6 with five runs scored, two RBIs, and three walks.
  • Robbie Armitage's homer gave him two for the day, and he totaled six RBIs and three runs scored.

The Red Foxes will close out their three-game series against Niagara with one more game on Sunday, April 28 at McCann Baseball Field. First pitch is now scheduled for 1 p.m.
