Baseball Wins Rubber Match to Take Series over Niagara

Skyler Pichardo Tossed 8.1 Innings for Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - In a cold and rainy afternoon showdown, Marist (20-21, 9-6 MAAC) emerged victorious over Niagara (10-27, 5-10 MAAC) to take the series.The teams were deadlocked at 2-2 until the Purple Eagles took a one run lead in the top of the eighth. With the game on the line in the bottom of the inning, Matt Rubayo tripled to right center field to drive in three runs and push the Red Foxes ahead for the win.
 
SUMMARY
  • Randy Taveras singled up the middle in the first inning to send Tyler Kapuscinski home and score the first run of the day. 
  • Reece Armitage singled to second base in the fourth, and then him and Frankie Gregoire advanced an extra base on a throwing error. Gregoire reached home to give Marist a 2-0 lead.
  • Niagara found some rhythm to tie the score in the fifth with a pair of RBIs from Michael Gabriele and Benny Serrano.
  • The game remained tied until Niagara's Josh Marchese batted in Peter Battaglia to put the Purple Eagles in a winning position in the eighth inning.
  • Randy Taveras, Frankie Gregoire and Gene Napolitano loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with two outs. Matt Rubayo made contact for a huge triple to right center field to score all three runners and propel Marist to a 5-3 advantage.
  • Zane Kmietek took the mound in the ninth after a strong performance from Skyler Pichardo and closed it out for the save.

  • Skyler Pichardo threw a career-high 8.1 innings and struck out six, allowing just three runs and nine hits.
  • Randy Taveras went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

  • Tony Romanelli leads the pitching staff with an ERA of 3.71 over 60.2 innings. He has punched out 60 batters.
  • Alex Pansini backs him up with an ERA of 4.02 in 62.2 innings. He's accumulated 50 strikeouts.
