Baseball Handles Holy Cross

Red Foxes Stave Off Late Surge for Victory

WORCESTER, Massachusetts – Marist baseball (21-21, 9-6 MAAC) defeated Holy Cross (19-28, 13-6 Patriot League) by a score of 7-5 on Wednesday evening. The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, and though the Crusaders made a late surge, they were staved off by a dedicated Marist defense in the closing innings.
 
SUMMARY
  • In the top of the second, Nick Cantone singled to the shortstop and drove in Reece Armitage to score Marist's first run.
  • Robbie Armitage smashed a solo homer in the top of the third past left-center field.
  • Reece Armitage smacked a two-run single, sending Frankie Gregoire and Gene Napolitano home to propel the Red Foxes to a 4-0 advantage.
  • In the fourth, Anthony Lazar kept the ball rolling with an RBI-single to left field to drive in Patrick Lightner.
  • Niko Amory singled up the middle to send Gregoire home, and Lightner was walked with loaded bases to advance Reece Armitage and score Marist's seventh run of the game in the fifth.
  • Holy Cross's Austin Masel hit a two-run single in the bottom of the inning, and then Alex Gionis stole home to put the Crusaders on the board with three runs.
  • Holy Cross added two more runs in the seventh to cut Marist's lead to 7-5.
  • The Crusaders put men on base in the ninth, but Ryan Cardona closed out the game for the save and the Red Foxes came away with the win.
KEY STATS
  • Robbie Armitage hit his third home run in four games, and now has nine on the season.
  • Reece Armitage went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored and three walks.
  • Eight batters recorded a hit for Marist today, and six of them batted in at least one run.
  • Ryan Cardona picked up his third save of the season, tossing 2.1 innings and scattering two hits while fanning four batters.
  • Marist has now won six of their last seven, and eight of their last 11 games.
