Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short on Senior Day

The Red Foxes Fought Till the End

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- Marist fell in close game to Fairfield 10-9 at Tenney Stadium Saturday afternoon. The game was back and forth game and featured three ties and four lead changes in the first half. Marist falls to 5-8 on the season and 2-3 overall.
 
SUMMARY
  • Both teams traded blows throughout the first half. Marist struck first when junior attacker Samantha Mehalick scored on a put back after the shot was saved after a free position shot attempt. Fairfield responded when Taylor Mitchell scored after being assisted by Brooke Gallagher. Jessica Lasaponara equalized for Marist but Kelly Horning scored seconds later to keep it a tie game
  • At 3-2 with 11:27 left in the half, Faifield went on a 3-0 run to close out the half and take a 5-3 lead.
  • Stags score twice in the first five minutes of the second half with goals from Meaghan Graham and Diana DeVita to jump out to a 7-3 lead. The Red Foxes would not go down easily, getting goals from Kelly George, Mehalick and Hailey Wagner to make it a one point game.
  • Fairfield and Marist continue to trade goals with Fairfield taking a 10-8 lead with nine minutes left in the game. With two minutes left in the game, George drove in front of the net to score and cut the deficit to one.
  • The stags won the ensuing draw control and burned time off the clock. Delaney Galvin made a clutch save with 30 seconds left on the clock and Marist took a timeout to strategize. The Red Foxes successfully cleared the ball but could not get their shot off to send the game to overtime.
STATS
  • Delaney Galvin had a tremendous game with 15 saves
  • Mehalick lead the team with three goals and Wagner and George both had two goals each
  • The Red Foxes dominated the Stags on draw controls and edged them 15-6. Hailey Wagner finished with 10.
  • The Stags finished 22 for 23 on clear attempts
  • The Stags edged Marist on shots on goal with 25 compared to Marist's 18
FROM THE COACH
"I think this year our seniors have stepped up a lot and I think a lot of them showed they can be leaders on the field as well," Stated Head Coach Jessica Wilkinson. "I thought they played really great today unfortunately we did not come up with the win."
 
UP NEXT
The Red Foxes will travel to take on Niagara in a MAAC matchup on Wednesday April 10th at 3 PM.
