Baseball Begins MAAC Championship Against Manhattan

#4 Red Foxes Battle #5 Jaspers Once Again

STATEN ISLAND, New York - Finishing the season with a 15-9 MAAC record and a 27-24 overall record, Marist baseball earned the fourth seed in the MAAC Championships. They are set to play fifth-seeded Manhattan tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The tournament is double elimination, and opponents for the following rounds will be decided based on who wins and who has the higher seed.

CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD
  • Four teams from this championship (Canisius, Quinnipiac, Marist and Monmouth) were in last year's tournament as well. Fairfield and Manhattan are the newcomers.
  • The Red Foxes went 7-5 against the tournament field in the regular season.
AGAINST MANHATTAN
  • Marist won the regular season series 2-1. Manhattan won 14-4 on April 19, but the Red Foxes took the doubleheader the next day 6-4 and 11-4. Game three lasted 10 innings.
  • Patrick Lightner and Nick Cantone tallied two RBIs each in game one. Skyler Pichardo earned the loss, recording the start and tossing four innings.
  • In game two, Reece Armitage led the team with a two-run triple. Robbie Armitage batted an RBI-double while Tyler Kapuscinski and Brian Hart hit RBI-singles. Tony Romanelli pitched five innings and struck out 10 while giving up three earned runs. Ryan Cardona closed out the game for the save with 2.0 innings of relief and just one hit.
  • In the rubber-match, the game was a nail-biter until the tenth inning when Marist opened up a huge lead with seven runs and five hits. Tyler Kapuscinski was superb, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Reece Armitage was clutch with a three-RBI double in the tenth to build the lead. Kapuscinski and Niko Amory each had two-RBI hits in the tenth as well. Alex Pansini started, went 6.1 innings and struck out three, allowing three runs and nine hits.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
  • Marist has won six MAAC Championships: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2009, and 2017.
  • The Red Foxes reached the finals eight total times, earning runner-up finishes in 1998 and 2003.
  • Marist has qualified for the MAAC Championship in 16 seasons.
  • In the 2017 championship finals, Marist defeated Iona by a score of 5-1 at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls, NY. Current graduate student Tony Romanelli was named MVP as a sophomore. He recorded three consecutive saves in the Red Foxes' three wins of the tournament, tossing a total of four innings with just two hits and no runs while striking out five.
  • Patrick Lightner recorded two hits and an RBI, Tyler Kapuscinski picked up two hits and two runs and Frankie Gregoire tallied a hit in the championship game.
  • Head Coach Chris Tracz was a member of the team for the 2001, 2002 and 2005 championships.
