Baseball Sweeps Saint Peter's

Red Foxes Outscore Peacocks 26-5 in Doubleheader to Take Series

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, New York - Marist baseball (24-21, 12-6 MAAC) swept the series over Saint Peter's (4-40, 2-16 MAAC), winning both ends of the Saturday doubleheader. The Red Foxes scored a season-high 20 points in the first game to put away the Peacocks. In the finale, Saint Peter's put up a good fight but Marist held strong on defense to come away with the 6-4 victory and the sweep.
 
GAME ONE SUMMARY
  • Marist started off the game with seven runs in the first inning. Niko Amory hit a two-run single, while Frankie Gregoire, Reece Armitage, Matt Rubayo all earned RBIs.
  • Not satisfied with that, Red Foxes caught fire for ten runs in the third. Gregoire smashed a two-run homer, and then came back for a 2-RBI single as the team batted around.
  • Tony Romanelli threw five innings and gave up just one hit. 
  • The Peacocks scored a run in the sixth to prevent the shutout.
  • In just his second appearance of the season, John Port blasted a two-run homer past right field in the sixth inning to drive in Matt Rubayo.
  • Patrick Lightner scored on a wild pitch, and Marist secured the 20-1 win.
KEY STATS
  • 20 runs was a season-high for the team, topping last weekend's 19-3 win over Niagara.
  • One run equaled the least that the Red Foxes allowed this season.
  • Gregoire smashed his second home run in as many games, and led the way by going 2-for-2 with five RBIs, two runs scored, two walks and the homer.
  • Niko Amory went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
  • Romanelli earned his sixth win of the season. He struck out six and walked just one batter.
GAME TWO SUMMARY
  • Tyler Kapuscinski started off the series finale with a big triple down the right field line to drive in Anthony Lazar.
  • Gregoire stayed hot with an RBI-single down to left field to send Kapuscinski home.
  • Saint Peter's scored a pair of runs in the third to tie the game.
  • Marist added four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-2 lead. Rubayo smacked a triple to center field to drive in Reece Armitage, while Gregoire and Gene Napolitano drove in runs to propel the offense.
  • The Peacocks scored runs in the sixth and seventh to cut the deficit to two, but could not trim the lead any more. Ryan Cardona closed out the last two innings while only giving up one hit for the save.
KEY STATS
  • Gregoire was lethal for the third straight game with two RBIs. He batted .667 for the series with eight RBIs and two homers.
  • Tyler Kapuscinski smashed a double and triple with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Cardona struck out five over two innings for his fourth save of the season.
  • Anthony Lazar was efficient in the series sweep as well, batting .444 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. The senior also went 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts.
NOTES
  • Gregoire is batting .301 for the season with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs.
  • Tyler Kapuscinski is hitting .371 over 32 games with 22 RBIs and four homers.
  • Romanelli leads the pitching staff with an ERA of 3.43 over 65.2 innings. He's struck out 66.
  • Pansini is not far behind him with an ERA of 3.82 in 70.2 innings with 57 strikeouts.

Marist heads to Albany on Wednesday, May 8 for a rematch with the Great Danes. The game begins at 3 p.m.
