Marist Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Canisius

Red Foxes Win Second Game After Being Down To Final Strike Trailing By Two

BUFFALO, New York – The Marist softball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Canisius on Saturday. The Red Foxes won the first game, 5-4, and rallied for a 6-4 triumph in a 10-inning second game.
 
Game One - Marist 5, Canisius 4
  • Senior Brandi Coon's RBI single in the first brought home sophomore Caroline Baratta, and gave Marist a 1-0 lead.
  • The Red Foxes scored three times in the third. Senior Casey Page scored on an RBI groundout by red-shirt junior Claire Oberdorf. A bunt by freshman Kaley Coltrain then resulted in two additional runs scoring.
  • Canisius answered with three runs in its half of the third. Erin Hufford had an RBI single, and Hannah Catallo-Stooks followed with a two-run double.
  • Marist maintained a 4-3 lead until the sixth, when Coltrain belted a solo homer.
  • Kara Paradowski homered in the bottom half of the sixth. The Golden Griffins then got a runner to second base with two outs, but were unable to push across the tying run.
  • Coltrain finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Junior Ali Milam went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Freshman Calista Phippen (18-3) went the distance and struck out nine.
  • Paradowski went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
 
Game One - Marist 6, Canisius 4 (10 inn.)
  • Lauren Castro hit a three-run homer for Canisius in the bottom of the first.
  • Coltrain homered in the top of the second.
  • Oberdorf's RBI double in the sixth brought home Coon, and cut Marist's deficit to 3-2.
  • Molly McGuire's RBI single in the bottom half of the inning gave the Golden Griffins a two-run lead back.
  • With two outs, no one on base, and the Red Foxes down to their final strike, sophomore Hunter Hand reached on an infield single. Baratta followed with a game-tying home run.
  • A two-run triple by Oberdorf in the 10th brought home Page and Milam with the game's final runs.
  • Baratta and Oberdorf finished with three hits apiece. Oberdorf drove in three, while Baratta had two RBIs.
  • Sophomore Nicole Teague pitched four innings of scoreless relief for her first win of the season.
  • Castro finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Notes
  • Marist is now 15-3 in conference play heading into the final day of the regular season. Second-place Monmouth has concluded the regular season at 16-4. If the Red Foxes win one game in their Sunday doubleheader at Niagara, they will clinch the #1 seed in the MAAC Softball Championship, and will host the championship at Gartland Field.
  • Marist has won eight straight.
  • Coltrain homered in both games of the doubleheader, and has four homers in her last six games.
  • Marist has won game one of all nine of its MAAC doubleheaders this season.
 
Records
  • Marist is now 32-19 overall and 15-3 in the MAAC.
  • Canisius ended its season at 14-31 overall and 8-12 in the conference.
